ZZ4 Owners...please answer these questions
OK. Prospect of rebuild is dimming and ZZ4 is growing.
1. HOT cam. Worth it?
2. Manual trans guys. Did you have to play with the clutch to make it work? What clutch components and how about the cllutch fork ball stud?
3. Short water pump issues?
4. Have Dynomax headers already. Will they work with the D-port heads? This is the big ???
Thanks.

Steve: You sound like your thinking of a ZZ430 clone (i.e., HOT cam and Fast Burn heads). That's what I've put in my 63 coupe. Here's what I've learned so far.
1. I needed a different flywheel to match with my M21 four-speed manual
transmission. I got the part number from GM and tracked down the best price
on the net.
2. The original clutch inspection cover would not fit because the rear
bearing piece on the zz430 is larger in diameter than the original. I
bought a new clutch inspection cover and cut out the center opening to
allow it to fit the new engine.
3. "Fast Burn" heads on the ZZ430 haver larger D-shaped exhaust ports that
won't work well with stock exhausts and most aftermarket headers. I ended
up buying a set of headers from Sanderson that are made for Fast Burn heads. I don't know about the specific headers you mentioned. The stock exhaust system (2.5 inch style) had to be modified to fit the
Sanderson headers.
4. I had to get spark plug wires compatible with the headers.
5. Because of the headers, I had to get new mounts for the alternator and
VintageAir a/c compressor. I used Zoop brackets.
6. Fast Burn heads cause the intake manifold to sit higher than conventional
heads. Also, the ZZ430 intake manifold is a semi-hi-rise style that raises
the carburetor some. The net effect is that I couldn't fit a Holley 4160
carb with a conventional air cleaner under my stock, small block hood. I
replaced the intake manifold with a Performer (#2116) from Edelbrock and I
had the carb mounting surfaced milled to remove 0.25 inch. All together,
that lowered the carb about 0.5 inch. A special drop base air
cleaner dropped things another 0.5 inch. Incidentally, there are air cleaners that will fit, but they all have reduced flow capacity that would likely reduce the power output of the ZZ430.
7. The ZZ430 comes with an HEI distributor with an electronic tach output.
My 63 Vette had a mechanical tach. I decided to have the tach converted to
electronic and keep the HEI distributor.
8. The ZZ430 doesn't come with a fuel pump. You'll need one.
9. I decided to replace the ZZ430 water pump (long style) with a short
style pump to keep the pulleys and fan in their original locations. This
required modifying one of the bolts on the back of the new water pump to
allow it to fit with the timing chain cover.
I know this is both more and less than what you asked, but I hope it helps.

Steve,
I'm not sure about the Hot Cam. I haven't installed one and I have incredible power. If your really pushing for more knowledge on all your topics, I would recommend you talk to Scott at Sallee-Chevrolet. http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com He is in their speed shop and has tons of experience with the ZZ4 and it's various modifications. They also have a forum that is very helpful. Good Luck. BTW, Nice car...Nice color.
