I went from an 1800 stall to a 2500 on my 76 that has a 383 stroker.
I noticed considerable improvment in launch. It seems to just want to get up and go being in the power band more.
Yes I have a tranny cooler on my TH350.
The converter made a big difference even with my 3.08 rear end.
In a few weeks I am installing 3.55 gears and should see even better launch. Then sticky tires are next.

I use a 2200 stall with a perma cool trans cooler. I haven't tried it out yet but I'm hoping for a large improvement with me XE268H cam.

I bought the Summit 1800 - 2200 stall and it kicks in at 1800 :mad but doesn't kick in hard :nonod:. Also my car doesn't hit a power band till after 2300, so I'd like to know more for a furture upgrade.

So I have a couple questions to all responded;
1) what type do you have?
2) when does it kick in?
3) do you hold the brake till it kicks in?
4) what happens when you don't hold the brake and punch it from a dead spot?

Alwyn678. With the 3:55's, and the 383, i thought about 2800 would do it. My engine builder said go to a 3500 with my set up. Right on the money. It's go right NOW!!!! JCL    :chevy

Summit cooler PN; SUM-G4960 fits nicely under the nose attched to the center bumper support with zip ties.

B&M shift improver kit TH400 PN: BMM-20260 it might be easier to install the shiftkit when the trans is still in the car, since it is held up for you. My point being that the check ***** sit on the seperator plate in a certian posistion. Im sure it can be done, but I have never installed a shift kit with the trans out of a car and inverted. Doing it with the trans inverted could make it more tricky to get the check ***** in the correct place since you would have to drop them into the trans case rather then placing them in a specific location on the seperator plate. With the trans in the car you just set the ***** on the plate in the correct posistion and gently lift the valve body into place.

All the seals and adjustable modulator I got from a local trans parts supplier.

Heres a point to check too. Does your electric kickdown function work? The solenoid is located in the pan and easy to replace when the pan is already off.
if your electric kickdown works then your car should downshift automatically from 3rd gear 30mph cruise to first gear on a full throttle peg. If it only drops to second, then it aint workin.

Tip for good launches with automatic transmissions:

Must have good brakes, espesially rear brakes, and especially corvette rear brakes. Believe it or not, good drum brakes work better than discs for starting line holding power. So with a C3 its very important to have good rear brakes. I learned this the hard way by going to the track one time with less then very good brakes. My 60' times suffered since the barkes would not hold the car under higher load on the line.

After staging:

1. Hold brakes down hard with left foot.
2. pull trans into gear and bring the rpms up against the convertor till the rpms are at the highest they will get. This will be the point just below where the convertor really wants to move the car.
3. On the third yellow light, simultaniously release the brake and slam the throttle.

Stall speed will very on the same convertor; The same convertor will give more stall speed on a bigblock then it will a smallblock. Higher Tq= higher stall. Vehicle weight and engine mods can effect stall speed. Heavier vehicle will produce higher stall. Engine mods that reduce bottom end tq can result in lower stall speed.

This TCI Break-A-Way 11" will most likely come in a bit lower then 2500rpm in your application with your engine mods. More like 2300 or 2400rpm.

I'm running a Continental converter rated at 3000 rpm stall speed. I run a 388 cu in small block and 4.11 to 1 rear gear ratio. The converter works perfectly with a best sixty foot of 1.51 on the motor and 1.40 with nitrous.

The way I see it about stall convertors is how much actual track time you do compared to actual street time, to work and such???
If you have a dedicated track car....well go for it....especially if you have an o/drive lockup tranny....
if you drive a 350-400 tranny with no lock capability on the street much and only occationally at the track.....well better have lotsa money for gas and a very effective tranny oil cooler...the slippage translates to heating the tranny oil...and so it need very effective cooling if you want tranny to live....
ME, I hate that slippy slidey outta gear feeling on even my stock 2k stall converter, but I don't drag race...I"m into more of the high speed dashes....
so I am going the other direction and pulling the stock vette 2k converter and going for a super tight truck unit...about as close to zreo stall as I can get....even with lockup....
