Default What's on your steering column stalk?

I'm searching for a steering column for "The Project" and want to see if there are any years of GM steering column that have wipers/lights/high beam/etc on the column stalk, and still have the "round" steering column, not one of the big plastic column fairings. So ... do you (actually your Vette or other GM car) have a round, no shift, tilt steering column with something besides the cruise control on one of the column stalks? If so, what model, year etc is it in.

Thanks - Greg

'77 has wipers on the column...I don't believe any other C3 is like that...not until the C5's.....I think..

The 1969 through 1976 Corvette steering columns were "function locking" and were available as tilt and telescoping (T&T) or as standard (non-adjustable). They were "round" head steering columns with the ignition lock cylinder sticking out the right side of the column.

In 1977, the round column grew a square bulge on the left side. Both columns (standard and T&T) had a turn signal lever that also incorporated a windshield wash/wipe switch. The lever connected to a pivot inside the steering column bulge that connected to the headlight dimmer switch which was mounted down on the side of the column. Cruise control became available aas an option but the "engage" button was placed on the end of the tilt lever for this one year only.

The 1978 through 1982 steering columns were basically the same except that the wash/wipe switch was removed from the turn signal stalk and returned to the dash. The cruise control "engage" button was an option on the end of the turn signal lever.

All of the above Corvette steering columns would basically be the correct length to fit in a C2/C3 chassis.

I believe that all GM columns were basically "round" in the above time frames.

In the mid 80's GM introduced what they called "square" columns. These columns had bolt together covers that enclosed the column heads. They were available as tilt or as standard columns.

Thanks. Wonder how hard it is to find a 77 style, as I'd like to get the high beam off the floor. Do you happen to know if the column is still a normal (?) 2" diameter across all the years, and used the "standard" GM wiring connector?

Thanks - Greg

77 was the largest production year up untill then. Shouldn't be hard to find a column at all. Check the bone yards :yesnod: Good luck

Snicker, some guy up north sold me a genuine vette TT column core assy for ten bucks....of course it need lotsa work, but I got it going fine for about 80 bucks in parts, then a wheel from later C3's small diameter....

I just recently finished spacing it back toward me off the firewall about 3/4 inch....all I could do without rewelding the mounting brackets...
wonder if all those TT wheels are the same dimensions that way???

at any rate this should work fine for me....
