454 Crankshaft kit?
Hi Everyone,
I am just about ready to get started on my 454 shortblock. Any recommendations on where I should look for a 454 crankshaft kit (including rods/crank/pistons)?
How about mail order shortblocks?
Thanks!
Bob

Try http://www.northernautoparts.com (1-800-831-0884). Best prices and
quality parts. I rebuilt a 283 for my 67 Chevelle and used their kit. Excellent
mail order parts source.

Bob, for stock GM stuff, I would contact Scoggins-Dickey (www.sdpc2000.com) I just bought a Merlin block from them, and they're customer service and freight shipping charges were excellent.
For high performance stuff on a budget, I like the Bill Mitchell Hardcore rotating assemblies (www.theenginefactory.com) They are fully balanced from the factory. You can also buy them through http://www.summitracing.com
Flatlander has great prices and service if you're looking to "roll-your-own". http://www.flatlanderracing.com You pick the components you want, and they will balance everything for you, then ship it to your door.
Hope this helps.

Bob - Your car is so over geared that you need the torque of a 4.25 stroker crank. 496 ci is the way to go. I have had good luck with http://www.speedomotive.com because I buy kit's. The people that hate them bought short blocks probably put together in east LA sweat shops.
What ever you buy I would spend the money for a forging 5140 at least.

Thanks to all for your help.
Tahos: I think I have one of their catalogs around here......
Bob Jenkins: I will check out that GM site. I wish I could just buy the zz502 and forget about it!!!!!
Flareside:
I like that Flatlanderracing site. I like the choices of manufacturers and different pistons (based on comp ratio). This is a good consideration as far as piecing a STRONG bottom end together!
GKull:
I agree with your analysis of Speedomotive. Buy a kit and have a trusted local machine shop build it. Buy why a 4.25" stroker? What advantages over a 454 would I have?
I want to run 9.0-9.5 to one compression, use the XE274H Comp cam, small tube headers, possibly a Holley 850 VS, and either a Performer or Performer RPM intake. I picked the camshaft because Chevy High Performance used it in a 9.0 to one 454 and made 480hp which I would be satisfied with.
What do you mean by "overgeared"?
Thanks for your input and valuable advice!

Re: 454 Crankshaft kit? (Bob Turner)
Over geared is your final drive ratio. 3.08 X .62 OD = 1.9.... gearing. Unless you have a lessor OD in your ROD you would be lugging the motor in sixth at freeway speeds. My final drive in OD is 2.86 and I figure that 2.5-2.75 is about optimal gearing.
If the stroker motor can be built for the same amount. I would go for more power with the extra cubic inches. I would also find out from big block guys how much c/r you can run with 92 octane and base your compression on that. Higher C/R is free power. My next motor will be 1/2 a point higher at 11.4 or so. I just don't know enough about big block chamber designs to tell you to run 10.4 or something.

Re: 454 Crankshaft kit? (MassVette)
MassVette Very nice looking car and clone job. To clear the motor did you just rotate the power steering outboard.
I have some clearance issues with my big dart heads and Valve covers and I wasn't sure if i wanted to try Norval"s belt driven power brakes just yet.

I used a GM type III p/s mini-pump with a remote reservoir.

Re: 454 Crankshaft kit?/ Compression Ratio? (Bob Turner)
I took my 049 heads to the machine shop to have them cc'd. They said that they could sell me a forged GM 454 crank that is in excellent shape for $400. Once these heads are cc'd, I will know what pistons to get!!!
I am planning a compression ratio between 9 and 9.5. What do you guys think of this compression ratio range????
I want to run pump gas...
Bob

Bob,
I sent zip files for IE bookmarks. Let me know if you get them this time.
Mike
P.S.
