Default ZL-1 Price

I know that a ZL-1 block can be brought for $4500-$5000. How much will pistons, connectiong rods, crank and cam shafts, heads, etc cost? How much will a total ZL-1 weigh? How much will a C3 to put it in cost?
Thank You!!

I don't know about the ZL-1 parts, but there was an article in a recent Corvette Fever about its return and all the parts needed to build one.

As to the price of a C3, it REALLY depends on what year/model (coupe/conv) and whether you want to be able to drive it while you are building the new engine.

It is good to talk to someone else who is young. I bought my 78 when I was 15, so I couldn't drive it for better than a year after I bought it (legal driving limit in AK is 16).

Good luck in your search. As a side note, you need to get a 73 or earlier because anything newer has emissions control rules that would not let you put an aftermarket engine in it.

it will weight about #500,sames as a iron small block with aluminum heads and it will cost you $15,000 to $20,000 depending on how much HP you want to make. "speed cost money, how fast do you want to go"

Hey garage! good questions! Clem, I had to re-read your post. I was puzzled by your same weight comment, but I see you said same weight as SMALL block w/aluminum heads. Also, surprised at your total cost estimate - that's a lot of $$ !

But, this topic reminds me - we have not heard from Joe Lucia in a long long time. Wasn't he building a ZL1 engine? I dont recall what the objective was - if he was going to convert his original owner 69 to a full ZL1 clone (with paint job, etc) but..... where is Joe? MJ

If you pay someone to do it, which you should unless you're experienced at building engines, 15K to 20K is probably about in the ball park. However, I built an iron block 427 completely forged for around 6 to 7 grand. Add 5 grand to that, and that's about how much a ZL1 would cost doing one yourself.

You're only saving about 150 lbs by building an aluminum big block rather than an iron big block. And my feeling is, that 5 grand could be better put into go-fast parts. Shoot, you could get a 502 crate motor cheaper than a ZL-1 spec 427. And the torque would be much better.

But you have yet to buy your first Corvette, right? It's best to walk before you try to run.

The parts from the iron version will fit on a ZL-1, right? Is dry-sump lubrication avalible?

MJ,

Joe Lucia was having some problems with his ISP. I don't know if the problems are solved completely, but he IS posting on the NCRS Discussion Board again.

Joe was indeed building a ZL-1 style engine using the reissued block. I hadn't heard how far along he was, but I get the impression that he's hoping to have it done this summer (that's what I gathered from his posts anyway). I doubt he'll change the paint scheme or anything that radical... He'll probably want the ability to return it to stock when he wants to. That's really a question for Joe though...

Regards,

Man, Shawn has all the best toys! What are you building? A 427? A 496 stroker ZL1 would be very cool indeed!
