Did all 73 454 come with turbo 400 I asumed mine was a 400
I still can't see that kick-down switch around the gas pedal, I did notice an orance wire hoohed-up on the drivers side of the tranny. I also assumed I have the turbo 400 because of the 454 engine. How can I tell ?

All automatic Vettes in '73 used the TH400. The TH350 was not used in Vettes until a few years later.

TH 350 pan is square, If you use your imagination, the TH 400 pan looks like Nevada. The switch is on a bracket approx. 2 in rear of the pedal and would contact the top arm just below the cable. If it is gone Lokar makes an external switch.

If there's a wire on the tranny, it's a 400. The 350 has no electrical connectors on it - the kickdown is with a kickdown cable that enters the tranny right by the dipstick tube.
Kickdown switches are available brand new from GM - I just bought one not long ago.

Are you guys only talking about a specific year Vette, or just BB Vettes or what? I have a 70 with the 400 Turbo tranny, but I don't have a clue what you guys are talking about

What is the kick down supposed to do, and how would I know if it was working properly? My car shifts fine, but if there is something I might be missing I'd like to try to find out.........Thanks :)

All turbo 400 trannys use an electrical solenoid to make the transmission downshift when you floor the gas pedal. You can see the electrical connection if you look under the car at the driver's side of the transmission - about in the middle of the tranny. This solenoid gets its signal from a switch which is located just forward and above the gas pedal. The gas pedal hits the switch when you floor it, and power is sent to the tranny. This engages the solenoid, and the solenoid moves the downshift valve in the valve body. The tranny balances the signals between the vacuum modulator, the governor, and the downshift solenoid to "decide" if it should downshift or not. If one of these components is not working right, the tranny will not downshift consistently when you floor it.

Re: Did all 73 454 come with turbo 400 I asumed mine was a 400 (lars)
Very interesting and informative stuff here. I can't remember my tranny ever downshifting when I floored it. I would have to assume that something is not working correctly. I guess I will read back through this and the other TH400 thread to find out the steps I need to take to trouble shoot the issue. Is it safe to assume that this will increase your higher end acceleration, since the tranny can downshift if necessary? I have noticed that if I am doing 70 or 80 MPH and I floor it, I don't get a burst of quick acceleration, just kinda slow and steady.
