Questions on '81
On another web site, it states that '81s have the composite single leaf spring.
My '81 has about 10 steel leafs in it.
When purchased, was told that the suspinsion was upgraded (that was 15 years ago when it was purchased). According to my VIN 1G1AY8768B51016-- It looks to me like a fairly early BG car. Is this a factory spring?
I have seen posts about ordering a information kit from GM for restoration but I can not find them now, can anybody help?

Re: Questions on '81 (gerry c)
All 78-80 vettes and 81's with 4 speed manual trannies with standard suspension had a 9 leaf rear spring. The 81 vette with auto trans and standard suspension and all 82's with standard suspension had the monoleaf fiberglass rear spring.

1981 was the first year of the Monoleaf rear spring. There were several wieght saving things done on the 1981.. Auto Trans, with std. suspension mostly came with the Monoleaf spring (some early St. Louis cars made it out with the steel springs) this provided a savings of 33lbs, the side glass and the roof panels where thinner, also stainless-steel exhaust manifold, magnesium rocker covers and an auxiliary electric cooling fan to supplement the regular belt driven one.
There are other unique feature of the 1981, but in short 1981 was the introduction of the Monoleaf rear spring made of reinforced plastic.
