How can I tell what rear end I have?
I have looked in the back at the rear axel...just in front of a 4 bolt plate with what looks like a grease fitting and just under the leaf spring I found a code: AN 1 13 65. This is stamped as best as I can tell on the bottom of something that the U joint and drive shaft go into. Is this the code that tells what the rear end is or is it something different?

At the very bottom of the differential, on the bottom flange where the cover joins the main body of the unit, is stamped code giving the axle ratio, plant and postitraction source. If you will give that information, I can access my neighbor's 73 Judging manual and tell you what ratio.

That rear end was originally installed in a 1965 Corvette with either the 327/350 or the 327/365hp engine. The AN Suffix is for the small block 3.55 ratio with Positraction. The 1 13 65 is the date of assembly. Now, the someone could have changed the ring and pinion inside, but it started out as a 3.55. This ratio would give you about 31-3200 rpm @ 70mph.
