I don't have any pic's even though I got a digtal camera for Xmas. I bouth the pionier speackers that are enclosed. They really are made to be deck speckers. I made a bracket out of alum. Bent it at an angle like 60 deg. So I have a bracket that looks like a 2"x2" angle about 8 " long. I screwed the bracket to the back panel up high and attached the speakers to it. With the angle they kind of point down and leave all of the rear deck space open for my t-tops. Ecklers sales these speakers, check out the catalog.

In my 71 I had to leave room for the tops and for the rear glass storage tray. I put in a bracket in each back corner attached on in side to the back panel and the other near the top of the fender. It had space for 6x9 speakers that angled towards the cab. But it was a pain to get back in there and get the brackets right.

Depends on how much you want. Here's a pic of my rear setup. Sub is a 10" JL Audio. Sides are 6.5" Pioneers. I'm very pleased with the results and the T-tops do fit.

Good question... I went out and got a pair of Pioneer triaxes 6x9's and mounted them in the rear corners (no speaker boxes) and get NO bass out of these things at all. The speakers in my front dash give me more bass. Theres a guy in here Chris Fowler ' 80. I was looking on his web page and he looks to have a nice setup in the back of his. Also in the tech tip section they describe how to build some speaker boxes. I have to do something with mine cause I know these pioneers of mine will work better than my current setup....

Easy solution is a pair of small bookshelf speakers from radio shack.

I have some 8's that fit very nicely in the rear of my '77. Click on the link in my sig to see some pics. They produced good sound and I still have room for my t-tops.

Mountainshark76,

I have 6.5" speakers in the kickpanels, 4X6's Infiniti's in the dash. I like Zwede's rear luggage area setup, so I may do something like that in the back. I would go with only ONE amplifier to save space and headaches!

I use a set of Kenwood truck bock speakers. The t tops will lay across the top of them for easy storage. If I need more room the speakers have quick disconnects at the back and it takes two seconds to take them out. There is a small amplifier that sits in the well where the jack goes.

In the rear of our '73, I made new doors for the three storage areas. The outer ones are 3/4 inch thick MDF. I cut them out to accept coaxial 6X9 speakers mounted from the top. Made sure to check for clearance over the battery (no problem). They are upholstered with black naugahyde to at least come close to looking right. The center one is mostly a perimiter frame to attach the hinge and lock. It is black ABS plastic. The center of that one is perforated metal to allow air to get around the small amp that is attached to the bottom side. All three have been mounted to the hinge just like the original doors and all locks and pull rings are in place. The speaker grilles stick up less than an inch. The sound isn't what some would call great, but it does produce some bass and supplies pretty good rear fill. I'm happy with it, but it certainly isn't anywhere near the sound performance of a high end system. It all depends on what you think is a "good sounding" system. This works for me.

In my 70 I have two Infinity Kappa 6 1/2 inch speakers in the dash instead of the 4X6 plate speakers. I have a 10 inch Fosgate Bass tube behind the Passenger seat, which still leaves room behind the driver seat for my T-Tops. I have it all hooked up to a Profile amp, which is mounted in the jack storage compartment, since I don't have a jack. I still have room on the amp for rear channel speaker, so I am going to get 6x9 carpeted boxes and some 6x9 speakers and mount them in the back as well. I am running an Alpine in dash CD player right now, but since I had to modify (Cut) the stock instrument bezel 3 years ago, my wife is purchasing me a Kenwood head unit with CD changer controls that will fit in the stock Bezel since I've already purchased a new Bezel. I love the Tunes when I cruise :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

Rich 80

You need boxes on the 6x9's to get any sort of bass out of them.

Go to my website in my signature and look at the install I did on my 74. I installed 4 - 4" x 6" speakers in the front and a Bazooka Subwoofer in the rear. This is powered by two amps and also has a 12 disk CD changer along with a Graphic equalizer. Even with all this equipment I can still fit my t-tops in the back along with some packages. Good Luck with your project.
