I was going through my back issues of CF last night for articles on C3's and reread the June 2001 issue. If you're going to rebuild, or just want to see what involved with the job see if you can get this issue. They cover C3 rear end and C2,(same as C3), rear bearings rebuilds. You'll still need a factory manual but these are the type of stories that I haven't seen in other vette mags.In fact I could only find one other CF issue that covered rear end rebuilding and that was from years ago.
Good job Andy. The only thing I saw that I questioned was the line where the guy was shimming for bearing end play and it said he can do it by feel? Usually .001-.002" can be a tough thing to feel by hand, of course the factory tolerance runs as high as .008". Most of the bearing guys set their bearings in between .001-.002" I will still use a dial indicator, because I don't have that touch.

I keep all my CF back issues...but i have a "SPECIAL" pile for issues that contain articles that i know i'm gonna need! June '01 is in THAT pile! ;)

Some of the real guru's have calibrated fingers. I even have some guys at work that say they do. I'm with you on using the correct measuring device for the job at hand.

There is no way fingers can tell between .002 and .004. They can come close but I don't want my stuff close or that feels good. I would rather know it is exactly the measurement. I use indicators and calipers for all measurements.

i always use my dial guage. i set them to a nice feel, and always check the tolerance before i go any further. i have made up a jig that the whole trailing bolts in, thru the front bolt hole and the shock mount, and set them that way. usually im pretty close, but as someone said close isnt always good enuff.
ive done over 20 sets of rear arms now and i dont want my cutomers heading back complaining of early bearing failure.

Have set up a ring & pinion by feel. Blew 2nd rear end 3rd member & combined parts from blown stock & blown 4.56 posi. to make 1 (4.56 posi.) at a service station. Not rec. Was somewhat funny as there were a lot of kids there & 1 guy telling everyone his brother-in-law was a mechanic who said it could not be done.

Some guy came up w/ a home made axle puller. No jack stands, I put a big guy in charge of the service station jack & told him this jack does not move unless I say so.
Lots of helpers, 1 guy pulling each wheel, 1 on each set of axle bolts, 1 on the driveshaft, at least 2 on the 3rd member. W/ that 1 guy proclaiming doom :eek: everyone hid behind other cars when I fired it up.
