POR 15 Prep
What is the best cleaning solution to use when preparing metal to be painted with POR 15? I am taking out my radiator support and painting it. It has a little rust on it but not too bad.

Ed is right - I did the wire brush thing and used a degreaser - then used the metal ready. You have to rinse and dry afterward, before painting. But it does a good job.

I just did the radiator support off my 72 this week with POR15. I cleaned it with degreaser, dried it with air, used the Metal Ready in a small container with a brush, keep it wet for about 20 minutes then rinse it off with water, dry it with air, then I dry it again with a heat gun to get all the moisture out of the cracks, etc, then painted with the POR15 gloss black and let sit for a day to dry. I did one side per day. I have it finished now with one coat. I'm not using 2 coats for this but some parts I used 2 coats then a top coat. This takes a while but comes out nice.I figure the support will be covered and dry most of the time, so 1 coat should be ok.

Scott,
I have some metal ready here at the house you can have if you need it. Let me know and you can pick it up tomorrow when we meet.

Hope I'm not too late to the party...
Just so you know, you asked about cleaners- metal ready isn't going to degrease the part.
The recommended procedure is cleaning/degreasing with Marine Clean diluted with water. They say it works best when diluted and I can attest to that.
That is followed by the Metal Ready which converts rust and etches the surface. This provides "tooth" for the paint to adhere to.
Then POR-15 coats and top coat if necessary.
Whatever you do, do not use a petroleum distillate to degrease. It'll goof up the curing of the POR-15. That point isn't real prominent in the instructions...
