How to match numbers in 74
Hi all,
I need to find out where to look to on my 74 to see if the numbers truly do "match"
I found the numbers on the block and the VIN of course. SHould they be the same? If not, where do I look to find the numbers and what should match to what?
Thanks

One of the two engine stamps should be 14S4XXXXX with the X's being the last 5 digits of your VIN. This same exact stamping was also applied to the tranny.

where are the stamps located. I found the one that is on the passenger side just behind the water pump. It does not match the VIN
Thanks

Yes, thats where it is and there should be two different stamps on this pad. Lets just say your VIN is 1Z37J4S437503. The VIN stamp on your engine would read 14S437503. The same exact stamp would also be on the tranny and these were applied at St Louis. The other stamp on the engine was done at Flint, MI and would look something like V0701CKZ, but this would vary depending upon engine type and assembly date. The VIN stamp must match the car's VIN, or its not the original engine. If it doesn't match, you can post what it is stamped on the engine, and we can decode what engine it is and what it was originally installed in.
