ZL-1 Aluminum 427 Returns
http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Chev.../12370850.html
I have read where GM is now offering the ZL-1 Aluminum 427 block for sale again. I followed this link to Sallee Chevrolet to read about it. Looks like it is selling for $5,000.00 Just curious if anyone was building one of these and how you were going about it. Thanks.

What the heck are those big holes above the lifter bores for? The 110 lb. weight sure sounds better than the 270 lb. Merlin I've been dragging around lately!

I just bought an aluminum small block along with some new tires for a whole lot more money. I can't justify the expense right now as much as I'd like to have it!

It's been out for quite a while... not a "new" development. per se.
The GM Aluminum block has a limited overbore. So if you want to build a monster cube engine, this is not a good candidate. A 540 requires a 4.500 bore. It sure is a pretty thing though.
#12370850 max is 4.300 bore x 4.375 stroke (508CID), comes with a 4.250 bore
The holes above the lifter bores go into the water jacket and must be plugged.
Also- it is recommended to use an aluminum radiator if you install an aluminum block due to the chemical nature of coolant.

I just ran part #12370850 on GMPartsDirect.com and the price was $4,750. If someone was going to buy one, you can save a couple of bucks. Shipping may cost a fortune though.

Re: ZL-1 Aluminum 427 Returns (BigBlockVette)
Just went to gmpartsdirect and the shipping came to $99.95. According to them thats approximate and could vary a little. Still at less than $5000.00 with shipping thats a pretty good deal.

Re: ZL-1 Aluminum 427 Returns (ScubaJKD)
This block has been out for a couple of years now. I have a copy of the 1998 GM Performance Parts Catalog and it is listed in there. There have been several articles written about this block in different car magazines including the Sept. 2001 issue of Vette. They stated that GM is considering a 4.5" bore verison. Now that would be nice.
Another neat thing about the new ZL1 block is that all of the water jacket core plugs are screw in with an O ring instead of the drive in style. At 110 lbs I wonder if it can shipped by UPS.
John.

Still curious if anyone is building one of these, and how you are going about it. Thanks.
He is building a modern day ZL-1 (using the reissued GM block) to put into his 1969; I'm sure that he can fill you in on all the details.

I've seen one of them at the macjhine shop I use. It's been sitting there for a year or so. Supposedly the owner wants to build a ZL-1 clone Camaro and is gathering up all the pieces. It's beautiful piece of aluminum. It has billet steel caps that are etched with ZL-1 on them. Really cool looking.
Of course the machine shop keeps looking at it and saying "why?". They like making HP and figure this one is giving up tons considering the $$$ spent.
It may not be the fastest thing out there but the "cool factor" will be very high!

Sat in a dragster tonight with one of those bad boy attached to the back....The owner says these engines can blow up and then repaired by welding,....install new sleeves and it's backout on the track....not sure if that's a fact or not....but I don't think cast iron would be able to handle that sort of repairs....Aluminum the way to go.....I want one,....However......MI-FUNS-A-LO :seeya

Don't bother! In another thread on the C-3 forum, "63 Banshee" says that many engines were faster, and he posted "road tests" to prove it, including: the 400 Pontiac, the 426 Hemi, 427 Ford, and the 440 Chrysler. Right.

I think I remember Joe saying he doesn't like the L-88 hood, so pretty sure he will be using the standard hood (or std BB) with the LS-6 aluminum intake. Probably be lower compression for pump gas and read he will use a hydraulic roller cam in place of the stock solid lifter.
