Bought Cam now I'm not so sure
I called Comp Cams and they recomended this cam for me
270h-12 lift 480 489 duration at .05 226 236 and 112 lobe seperation.
I bought the cam and now that I compare it to some other cams I was thinking about I think I made a mistake. I have a stock L48. with alum intake, demon carb and headers. I plan on getting a set of sportsmen II heads to go with the cam. Can anyone tell me if this cam is too big? I'm not sure what all the numbers mean. It seems huge.

NJ74STINGRAY just had his engine rebuilt by the same reputable performance shop I had mine done.
He has the same 270 cam as you with the Sportsman heads, performer intake and headers and he loves it.He does now have a 750 Holley. His is bored .060.
I took him to pick up the vette when it was done.
His '74 sounds great and idles so so nice.
I would have went with the same set up but with my TH 400 it wouldn't work.

The cam is not too big. When you make the switch to the new heads, be sure to get the 67cc and use a thin head gasket for more compression. As it is, the low compression that you have now with the stock pistons will be ok, but it will be even better once you have even more compression. Don't forget that you will need different valve springs for this cam. As for the cam specs, the 226/236@.05 will give you a powerband of about 2000-5500. What type of aluminum intake are you running now? If it is the Performer, than that will match the cams powerband perfectly.

Thanks guys I feel better now. It is the performer intake. I have a hard time with cams because I don't really understand the way there rated. I'm really excited about this buildup but I didn't want to screw it up.
I'm confused 69er why can't you use this cam with your automatic tranny?

She would stall when put in gear.
Your 570 Holley may be too small now.
Get some opinions on that.

Odd I thought the 3.55 gears would help that. But once again I'm new at all this. I've got a demon carb waiting in the wings. :D

I have a 2400 Stall converter but was still told I couldn't get to radical of an idle like i wanted.
Maybe I should have mentioned I had a 2400 when I had my engine rebuilt.

(75 L48 4Spd Cp. 15" TT wheels ,Performer intake, Holley 570 Street Avenger, k&n filter, Dynomax Ceramic headers, 3" cat converter)
Is that 570 a typo?i hope it was mean't to say 770
I like the cam but think the Dart Iron Eagle 180's would make for a better match for you manifold with out much loss in power if any.

No the 570 is what I had on my stock engine it was actually a nice fit for my 165 hp motor. I have a road demon for the new cam. its good for 400 hp. You suggest the dart 180's. Any reason why? I was originally going to go for some sr torquer's. But the sportmen ii seem to be used by more people.

I know several guys with that cam and a similar build up. I think you will be happy with it once you get all the mods completed. Anything bigger and I think you would have gotten into trouble. Rest Easy. Screw that FLOOR IT :yesnod:
