Engine Run On
Hey guys...Yuck...back at work...and the '70 is acting up!
Why would it just start running on after I turn the engine off? Do you think I should play with the distributor? Which way should I move it? Counterclockwise? Or Clockwise? The idle is at 800rpms when in Park.

Just a shot in the dark. Did you fill it up recently. I have had this problem by getting some bad gas. Ran the tank out filled up with different gas and the problem went away.

No...actually I haven't filled it up in a long time...cold weather...and the holidays...I filled it up a little while ago, so I will see what it does on the way home.

Re: Engine Run On (Eric 70)
It may be that the idle is too fast! Isn't it supposed to be around 650 with a automatic? I would also check the timing. I've had cars to do that if it was hot weather out. :flag

Re: Engine Run On (Eric 70)
Run-on can be caused by to high at idol. For an auto trans, 750rpm is Ok. on my 73 there was a soleniod that droped it down when you shut off the engine. If it just started to run-on it may be because of the choke holding it at fast idol.
Hope it's nothing that warmer weather won't fix

Re: Engine Run On (redwingvette)
I am now thinking it might have something to do with the choke...I had the carb rebuilt last summer, and couldn't really adjust the choke...now that cold weather is here, I can try messing with the choke.
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Engine Run On (Eric 70)
As stated, high idle is the main cause. Try lowering it slightly. You can advance the ignition a couple of degrees too. Turn the distributor counter clockwise to advance. With your vacuum advance disconnected, try setting the initial timing at 12 BTDC. This will speed up the idle so adjust it after doing the timing.
Also, I have had problems with run-on when using autolite plugs. A switch back to AC Delco R43TS plugs fixed it then.

Re: Engine Run On (Cam Potter)
There are many things that can lead to run on don't forget the idle has to be chacked in drive with an auto if it's not checked in drive it could stall while in gear high idle is the cause in many cases but retarted timing is also one as well as a choke staying on poor fuel will also cause run on, first thing I would do is check to see the choke is coming all the way off then go from there.

Re: Engine Run On (Turbo-Jet)
Yesterday, I took some choke out if it, and lowered the idle a tad...when I got home after a 30 minute drive on the interstate, it shut down fine. It was way too cold to drive it today, so I'll let you guys know how it does the next time I drive it. Oh yeah, I am also running 12 degrees initial timing with a dwell of 30...checked that last night as well.
