Default 07Z Tranny versus 08Z Tranny

Help! I had an 07Z and had difficulty with the 2-3 shift and, to a lesser degree, the 3-4 shift. They just didn't seem to line up or something. It almost seemed like there was not enough "room" for the gears to fit.In reading the CF I have read of only a few writing about this issue. What I learned from someone here is that the tranny fluid must be "warm" and the shift will be smooth. This had worked-I used the oil and water gauges to determine when we had reached ("we" meaning meaning me and the car) normal temp. I am told this is a good indicator. However, until we reached "normal" the issue exists.

I now read that GM has created a different tranny for the 08Z.

1. Will the 08Z tranny fit into my 07Z? (Assume I have the money, which I don't!)

2. What change did GM make?

3. Was the change in any way related to my particular issue?

I have since traded my 07Z some 7 months ago but she is STILL on the dealer lot. He wants $59,500. Car has 10k miles. !!!!!!! I have a hankerin' to buy her back but I first have to get this issue of the shift points straightened out-at least in my head. I currently have an 04Z which is nice but it ain't no 07Z. 505HP is a "ton" and runs like a bat out of heck!! I miss the fact that I don't have to get out of second gear much before 85!!!!

Thank you all,

Yes, the 08 tranny is better/different. Some people are still complaining about other issues with the 08. If you have an 07, and if you buy it back...it is still warranty covered...they should fix the issue...but, seems GM is trying to get out of covering anymore, so I don't know.

The Z06 transmission discussions are actually funny. Most fanboys of the older trans, the T56, speak glowingly of it because it's lighter, they like how it shifts better, etc. But the new TR6060 flat out works better. I've owned three T56s in a row, and the 2-3 shift is always an adventure ending with either a 2-5 shift, or the linkage jamming. I've found that a new shifter from Hurst, B&M, whatever, will greatly improve the T56 to at least the performance of the new TR6060. You should probably try that first...it's a lot cheaper. I don't know what the current "uber" shifter is.

An aftermarket shifter will shorten the throws and help with the 2-3 shift. BTW, I have blown a shift already; and I'm good; with my TR6060. I'll probably do an aftermarket shifter with it, too.

Good luck.

Good luck.
I might be alone, but don't believe there is an inherent problem with the 2-3 shift on a T-56 that isn't related to technique. I had similar problems as you described initially, but followed the advice from Ranger, Dr. Ron, and others to only use an open palm when making the 2-3 shift thereby allowing the springs in the linkage to do their thing without me trying to "steer" the shifter either intentionally, or unintentionally. After this, no more issues.

Not saying you didn't have issues with your T-56 tranny's, or that the T-56 is superior to the TR-6060 (doubt it is), just relating my own experience.

Anyway, would be interested to hear from other folks who maybe had the same issue and were able to adjust their technique to avoid the problem.

Somebody wrote that the T6060 is 30 lbs heavier but that sounds crazy. It's probably much less. Does anybody actually know the weight difference between the T56 and the T6060?

Had an '06 and missed a couple of 2-3 shifts. Now have an '08 and it shifts better than the '06. No missed shifts either. So, my vote is for the '08 shifter.

I would like to know the differences too. Currently I don't have any issues with my 07 transmission. Car has 12k miles. I do get clutch slip sometimes with nitrous.

Same here & I've tracked it hard several times on our local road course. Works just fine for me. Me thinks most problems are operator error.

All us Vette owners probably vary in weight by up to 150 lbs. Unless your the size of a Jockey, how much does it really matter. I weigh 230 lbs. I can lose 10 lbs to make up for the extra tranny weight.

According to many sources online, both the T56 and TR6060 weight the same 121lb.

Some list the T56 as "115-129lb"

The TR6060 is 121lb according to:

The weight difference is probably with the 60 having been topped with fluid and the 56 dry as a bone...

Whoever wrote that weight the T60 with fluid and the T56 without any as they weigh almost identical...some much more reliable sources have the weight exactly the same...

RANGER and his 06' didn't get into the 10's by blowing the 2-3 upshift.
