Test Pipe
Merry Christmas to all, hope everyone got lots of corvette parts. My daughter got me a test pipe for my 1981 coupe. I went outside to see if it fit because it looked small to me. It seems to be the right size, but while I was under the car checking it I found this hose or pipe going to the converter. Can I just remove this hose and plug it and take the belt off the AIR pump? Thanks for any help.
Happy Holidays to all.

Re: Test Pipe (Richard Cooper)
Shouldn't be a problem. My exhaust guy was concerned about exhaust leaks on my 84 so he just plumbed that line back into my right hand exhaust pipe (he put in 2 1/4" true duals for me). Be warned, your car will be quite abit louder after you remove the cat. My 84 is running targa mufflers and without the cat it is just about all I can handle! I am planning on switching to some Dynomax Ultraflows come springtime! I am also putting on a set of Edelbrock heads, Crane 2030 cam, and x-ram manifold this spring as well. I am looking forward to jamming on the throttle! P.S. you will notice a performance difference with the cat removed!

Measure the length you need and have a muffler shop make you one, or take it all off and run duals from the manifold back thats what I did. :yesnod:

Rusty,
I got the pipe from Muffler Tech in California. Their number is 1-877-722-3784. Its a toll free call. The pipe cost me $29.99 plus $10.00 delivery. Hope this helps you.

Re: Test Pipe (Chris Fowler '80)
It's a pipe used to replace a catalytic converter.
With the federal laws that were put in place, it's also deemed illegal. :D But for that matter so are duals. :D
I won't tell if you don't

Re: Test Pipe (terry82)
I bought a test pipe off ebay for my '81. Damn thing had the fitting for the air pump hose welded on the wrong side of the pipe. Surprisingly, when I installed the (corrected) pipe, there was no performance gain nor any increase in sound.
I've since switched to a high performance catalytic, so I won't have to remove the test pipe each time the car is tested for emissions. (I actually forgot the test pipe was installed when I had the car tested. It flunked the test, though the pipe was not discovered.)
