ok Im stumped...help please
The fan/clutch assembly...how on earth do I get those bolts off? When I finally get a good "bite" on them, and try to get them off, the whole thing spins...should I wedge something between the pully and the waterpump to try to keep it from spinning???
Could I take the water pump/fan/clutch assembly off as a whole? would that make it easier? All Im going to do is take it all apart, paint it, then put it all back together.

When you have a wrench on one of the bolts on the top, use a large screwdriver or small flat prybar on the bottom. Stick it with the end putting pressure on one of the bottom bolt heads, and the shaft prying against the shaft of the fan clutch. Then they loosen right up.

Normally you can "squeeze" the belt tight enough so it will keep the pulley from turning. If need be, pop the belt off and use it with a pry bar as a strap wrench on the pulley.

Not reverse threads!!!
1. Tighten up fan belt as much as possible.
2. Use a wrench on one bolt while you brak the others free.
3. Use a long screwdriver as a prybar to prvent rotation.
Good luck

only problem with tightening the fan belt is the altenator bracket is broken. good thing I noticed this now instead of when the alternater went....wherever it would have gone.
Im going to see about having it welded back. Anyone know what that may run me.
Daniel
PS. The more I get into this engine compartment, the more I realize is about to fall apart of my car. This is going to be expensive, but I guess its better then riding on the flatbed again.

Just put a screwdriver between 2 of the bolts or studs so it will not turn and break them loose. Loosen one, turn it to the next bolt, wedge it again with a the screwdriver and before long all are off.

I got it off...the bad thing was, the nuts didn't come off...the studs came out. Apparently it had studs with nuts...the nuts I guess where seized and like anything, it gave at the weakest link, so I have the studs out, with the nuts seized to them...I'll have to fix that before it goes back together.
Thanks for the help guys.

Glad you got them out ok. You can get new studs at any auto parts store. I replaced all of mine not to long ago.

There's no need to take the water pump off if you are only after the fan & fan clutch. If I remember correctly all I did was hold the fan in position with my left hand and crank the bolts off with my left hand. Use those muscles! :D
One you have all of the bolts off, it is just a matter of negotiating the fan out from in between the water pump and fan shroud.

I had the fan shroud and radiator off already. So it was pretty easy once I got the bolts loose. As for muscles, read the post on "what will santa bring you" or something along those lines. I have no muscles, I have to use leverage. :jester
Anyway, the water pump is coming off next. I need to get to the timing chain cover. I want to paint that. Im going to try to paint the engine block in the car...its been done before...but we'll see if I can do it.
