Stopped at stop sign. Next thing Dodge Dakota tries to mount my Vette
So I'm stopped at this stop sign waiting to turn onto a busy road. Behind me is a Dodge Dakota, also stopped. All of a sudden: BAM!
Kid in Dakota though I had moved (???) and floored it. I never moved an inch.
License plate pushed in about 3-4 inches. Rear valance all cracked. Gash taken out of ducktail spoiler as well as long cracks along the edge. The middle of the rear panel is pushed in about 2".
Strangely enough my bumpers look fine.
Merry Christmas. :(
Dakota suffered broken headlight, smashed grille and scuffed bumper.
I'm sure the insurance stuff will be fun.

crunch!
OwWww! It should be his insurance which picks up the repairs but still frustrating! Make sure you write out notes for yourself of everything at the scene- time, direction of travel, traffic conditions, weather, any remarks/ admissions of guilt Dakota said to you.

Re: crunch! (Mac)
Markus, that is a total bummer. You would think that other motorists would pay more attention when in the presence of a classic Corvette, but they don't always seem to. Good luck getting it back together.

Re: crunch! (Mac)
Mac,
There was no argument about who was at fault. He admitted immediately. Also had a cop come out and write a report. Cop didn't impress me. He was as bored as can be. Didn't ask a single question. I guess it's boring to him, but I spent 4 damn years restoring this thing!

Man that sucks!!! I hope all turns out well. Be carefull. Insurance companies can be a real pain in the butt when it comes to fixing classic cars. I would just shoot someone who smashed either one of my vettes!!!

Re: Stopped at stop sign. Next thing Dodge Dakota tries to mount my Vette (compuvette)
Compuvette has it right about the insurance company's. In May I was stopped waiting to make a left turn, and a guy in a Dodge intrepid hit me doing about 45 miles an hour. Explanation.....he was tuning his radio and never saw me. I know he didn't see me becuase he never hit his breaks. Got the car back 4 months later, total bill to the insurance company $8,000 dollars not including the 4 month's they paid for my rental car. At least 3 times a week for the entire 4 month's I had to fight either the insurance company or the rental company about one thing or another.... :mad It was hell and I almost killed a few people in the process. Good luck with your repairs :bs

Re: crunch! (zwede)
When the kid sees how much $$$ it costs for correctly repair your car, he may change his tune and swear you were both rolling and YOU jumped on the brakes so the insurance adjustors decide to assess a portion of the blame to you. Even 10% of the bill is too much when he should be 100% responsible. That's why you need to get your version recorded on paper as soon as possible with all of your observations. If it comes to a dispute of your word against his, those notes are your record of the incident and are considered better evidence than strictly mental recollection.
Can't really comment on your encounter with the donut muncher. Not all cops are car guys or even class acts (I like to think I'm the exception) but his report is like gold when it comes to convincing adjustors who did what.
My 73 was being moved on a car hauler (back in 1990) and the trucker stopped to put on chains while passing through the mountains. A logging truck rear ended the car hauler and damaged my car. The car hauler offered to repair my car (I got it on paper) and their insurance company agreed but because it was the logging trucker's fault, his insurance company fought it tooth and nail. At the end of the road, my car was fixed but I ended up on the hook for a portion of the costs. Learn from my mistakes- take nothing for granted.

That SUCKS!! WTF do you do in a situation like that. I think I'd be in total shock and just walk back to the guy and say "Why did you run into my car?"
Hopefully everyting with the insurance will work out. Keep us posted!

Markus, do you have a good body shop? Matching and blending the paint will be the hardest part of the whole restoration. I had to have my hood and surrounding fenders painted twice last year to get it right. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least he didn't bust up that beautiful engine compartment! -Joe

Zwede that really bites, I have seen your car and it is really nice, make them do it right, who you going to get to fix it? JBs over in Farmers Branch did work for me years ago and it still looks good.

Forget about everyone being OK, zwede, I love your car! It's what mine some day will be. That sucks, make sure it comes out right in insurance.

<I'd complain about my neck and start dreaming of what Im going to buy. just kidding.>
There are some that take that tactic to the extreme and it used to really bug me that people did that. But, the other side of the coin is that the insurance company is probably going to try to scew you on this, so maybe a little neck pain is in order. I know, I know, it's illegal, but so should paying someone 80% of the repairs for an accident that was not their fault. I'd at least hit them up for some kind of inconvenience/phsycological damage (which I know I would definitely have if someone hit my Corvette).
Good Luck.
