Default I will bet you your stearing box is Dry

In this months corvette Fever "how to rebuild your steering Box" I opened the top plate and looked in mine, it was completley dry I filled it with gear oil. Like most C3 vettes no-one knows or bothers to maintaine their stearing box. Check yours out.

So how did it steer after you greased it? Better or are the bearings shot?

Mine had very little in it so I filled it up. Did not notice much of a difference. I now know it is full

I made the same mistake! I filled mine with GEAR OIL. (Is that what you used?) You are supposed to use chassis grease, or something similar. I think they actually make a grease specifically for steering box, probably called "steering box grease". BTW, the gear oil didnt seem to hurt anything - doesnt leak. MJ

MNJack is correct, do not use Gear Oil; use the GM Grease pn 12377985. This is the grease that GM recommends to replace the previously used special Corvette box grease. Remove two bolts from the cover, then pump it in one of the bolt holes with your grease gun while turning the wheel lock to lock to fill the box til you see the grease just starting to come up in the other holeb, then stop.

See the steering box article in the Vette Improvement Program by John Greenwood. It covers adjusting, lube and the installation of a zerk fitting to facilitate topping off. I've beenusing chassis grease for years with no ill effects.

A very experienced Corvette Guru here in Germany told me he uses Mercedes Benz special grease for rebuilding the steering box.
This grease even sticks to the teeth when the headers bake your box........

I will let him rebuild mine in spring when I have dismantled the whole car.
