Has anyone installed their own seat covers
While on vacation, I intend to tune up my car, and put in new seat covers as well. Has anyone out there successfully completed this mission. What was the level of difficulty? How do you know if you need new seat foam, or should you put it in anyway?
Also, I noticed that the hog ring pliers and wires are sold separately when you buy seats covers. Do you need these? What are they for?
oes anyone have step by step instructions on how to do this job?
Thanks....................Glen :flag

Re: Has anyone installed their own seat covers (77Glen)
i can email you the instructions....from corvette america...
the hog rings pliers are a must...
they hold the retaining rods to the seat frame (springs.. for lower) and around the frame on the upper...
the hardest thing is fixing the old @##$@#@ing frame...
so far i have 1 broken hing bolt.... (no prob ill order it..) and i have a total of 2 broken off in the hole seat back stops... and 1 bottom broken off in the hole seat stop........ :mad :mad
and 1 cracked frame..
i thnk my other seat is much better though...
the easy part is installing the covers though... it is not hard...
just getting the frames back into shape is the hard thing..
welding...., drilling...,,, bubba-izing new holes... tapping...
blah blah blaaaaaaaaahhhh
:bs

I did our ’69. Just take your time. I took mine into the family room, plopped myself down in from of the TV and just relaxed.
Get the foam and also the clip set. The old clips fatigue and break after a while. As for the hog rings, just pick them up at the hardware store or lumberyard.

Did not install new covers, but did install new foam. Was pretty straight forward considering the repro foam is not exactly like the original. Just remember how it comes apart and where the hog-rings and clips come from.

Not really difficult - get new foams anyway - you might otherwise not be pleased with the results - lay the covers out inthe sun so they loosen up. I did one seat at a time, one per day over a weekend - not a problem. While the pictures arent of the seats exactly you can see my results at http://earchitect.50megs.com/corvette/vetteint.htm

Re: Has anyone installed their own seat covers (daily_driver)
Thanks for all the advice. I am going to use it when I do the work. I will heed thy warnings and get new foam as well. Somebody e-mailed me the instructions. I will use them.

I bought a video on doing this -- you want it? It was kind of useful, and it has instructions for redoing a soft top too. I'll see if I can dig it up. Email me if you want it. The job itself wasn't too bad, kind of fun. Wish I had known about laying the covers out in the sun to soften them and allow them to stretch, that would have made things easier.
