Engine Gurus, head gasket suggestion??
I've started my head, cam, manifold, exhaust replacement project. So far everything is going okay. I've got the heads off and checked how far down the hole my pistons are and they are in the .005-.007 range. The decks are flat, no more than a few thousandths difference.
I'm going back with Vortec 64cc heads, (current heads are 64cc camel humps) and I'm looking for suggestions on which head gaskets I should go back with. Running 10+ to 1 compression with cast iron heads is a little touchy, so I want to try and get my quench height just right to minimize pinging problems.
I have been leaning toward Felpro pre-flattened .039 copper gaskets, do these sound like a good fit? If not what do you guys suggest?
Thanks

I would use the Blue Fel Pro .038-.042
What are your cam specs?
The iron Vortecs cc at 61-62 stock. You can gain a little volume by unshrouding the exhaust valves and polishing the combustion chamber.I got 64cc by doing that

I used the Fel Pro FPP-1003 at .041. Perma torque/ blue with steel wire ring at 29.95 through Summit racing. the bore is up to 4.166".

I haven't made up my mind on the cam, I have 3 on hand that I can choose from.
Crane Blueprint Series 350/350hp cam (same as the old Chevy Cam)
Comp 268H
Comp XE262
I'm leaning toward the XE262, since it is a little more modern than the 268H, the Crane Blue Print is a distant 3rd so far in my informal cam competetion. I need more low end torque due to the 3.08 rear end I currently have.

Are those flat-top pistons, or the originals with the domes? (Assuming here a L-46 motor, like mine)...as I'm at approx 11:1 due to the domes. One thing of "Outlaw" per tank...and she doesn't ping. :smash:
(edit) Ok, I can't read...if you have the original pistons, then it should be 10.25:1. Are the Vortec heads aluminum?

I think you are correct on the XE 262.It has 4 degrees advance ground into it but I would advance it another 2 degrees.I can tell you how but you probably know.If you have not already done this, take a fine file and knock the sharp edges off the surrounding combustion chamber surface to help reduce the possibililty of a glowing red sharp edge.
It should go good with the 308's. Compression is torque and you are going to have that! Let us know how it turns out will ya?
