How long should I wait for the cam and heads to break in???
I really want to romp it but I only have 150 miles so far....I don't think I can wait for 500 miles but I do plan at 500 to drain the oil and make sure everything is tight.....I already had a small leak in the valve cover..bit of an oil leak..This motor makes a lot of compression for sure!!!!!

is a little metal bar that goes UNDER the valve cover screw to spread da force out.. you can torque em down a lil harder and u wont bend da cover...
any auto parts store sells em..
like 5 dux.

The cam is done with the break in after the half hour break in procedure. Assuming your using head gasket that don't need to be retorqued, then you have waited about 149 miles too long to start beating on it. :D The only thing tha needs extended break-in periods are rings and pistons. Go have fun :chevy

agreed with tsw71 go for it youve already broke it in when running the cam for 15-30 minutes at 2500 rpm.so let her rip.

If you broke the cam and lifters in by running for 2-3- minutes with rpms no less than 2-2500 you are ready now. Think of it this way: break im in fast..run fast, break im in slow.... well they run SLOW.

If you didn't already change the oil and filter immediately after cam break-in, do it now. The cam lube will plug up the filter and open the bypass and the engine will receive un-filtered oil until the filter is changed. Change it again at 500 miles.

If the motor has high compression like you say then I’d make damn sure I ran a high-octane fuel mixture and tapered it down slowly to find the right amount of “doping.” If you get on it the first time and the octane is 5 points too low you will gouge the cylinder walls with the pistons and there goes all your work and patience for nothing. Other then that change the oil and have fun. I always break a motor in as I plan on using it. Racecars hit the track early, about 300 miles, and streetcars get babied for 2000 miles.

Alwyn, Let me know how it runs!!! I want to know how hot that 284 cam is!!! I am chomping at the bit to stomp on the 71 next year. I am doing some serious work on the 84 this winter as well. New Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads, Crane 2030 cam, X-RAM manifold, and a new custom Delphi computer control system. I am expecting about 320-350HP out of the 84 and about 340HP out of the 71. I leave such a gap on the 84 because I don't know what the dyno will say on the 84 with the crossfire (don't make fun, it's still a vette!).

Just wondering. Why did you choose the blue racer cam? I looked at the specs. and it's much milder than the 284 number appears to make it.
Did you already do your first oil change?

Re: How long should I wait for the cam and heads to break in??? (Alwyn678)
I think it depends on who built the motor, when I had mine built they told me to take it to the drag strip. They are pretty confident in their workmanship, they said don't worry if you blow it up there's a fully one year warrant.:yesnod: The only warning :nono: I got was to rev it as high as I wanted, but shift if it starts to spudder, like if it's getting not getting enough gas.
I took it out and in first gear hit 6200 rpm,:reddevil and then back down because I was scared I would break something.

Alwyn, I already have the 284H in the garage. I was just trying to decide between that and a Crane Energizer 260 that I also have. You made my decision for me! 284 it is! Check out my post on dual quads. I just think that it would look real cool under the hood and would probably kick some butt as well.
