Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion???
I know this probably belongs in another section, but I thought I'd get more action here. Everyone knows the C-3 section is "The" car section!
I was checking out a 2001 Excursion V-10 with 25,000 miles. Guy will take my '89 Suburban and $20,000!!!
I thought that was a good deal. Blue book on the Excursion is $29,710.
I think I should take it and run!
Any opinions?
Thanks
Len

I bet you can get a NEW 2001 with your trade in and the cash back promo for 2001 models. BTW the dealers are really trying like heck to get them out off the lots every since the big gas price rise a few months ago...They are nice..I love them, but my wife hates them. I pick my fights carefully:) I say go for it...THE ultimate battle wagon!!!!

Don't forget to get some roo bars, a lift kit, and some big-**** 48 inch mud-swampers!
Also don't forget the huge halogen lights. You flash those and people will get right outta the way. :D

Thanks guys.
Pat---front rotor and disc's are still attached and working. I'm not sure about the milage----that's one of the things I'm not too worried about. Can't be much worse than the Suburban.
This was the only Excursion on this lot. They had a lot of Expeditions but no Excursions. Wife drove the Suburban primarily and this will be her daily driver. She's only 5'4" but loves to drive these monster trucks. She says that driving our Explorer is like driving a Kiddy Car! She has a habit of driving over curbs and mailboxes:lol: I said she should look at some Mack trucks
It's got gobs of power. 310HP & 425 ftlb of torque!
A real stump puller.

I knew a few people around here that had 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive fords with that motor. I say had because they all traded them after complaining about 6 to a max of 8 MPG. Other than that, they are probably nice enough. I would think that they would be hard to get around with in cramped parking lots though.

On a trip to Denver, I had a Explorer reserved, when I got to the airport they offered a free upgrade to an Excursion, so, I said why not ! I didn't like it. It seemed to big and cumbersome, My every day ride at home is a full size Dodge Ram Quad Cab, so I'm use to, and prefer big vehicles, the Excursion is too big. My preference would be Suburban / Tahoe or Expedition.

If I were to get one it would be a diesel. Noone I talked to is happy with the gas version. Bad mpg and not enough torque to pull a heavy load. I have heard no complaints with the diesel. My .02

Len, if our choices are the Excursion or the '89 Suburban, I'd take the Excursion in a heartbeat. I love big trucks, so if your wife doesn't have a problem with it, I don't see how you could go wrong for $20k. My last 3 trucks have been Fords, and they are built great! Best trucks I've ever owned. I just bought a leftover 2001 F150 supercab last month.
Now, I did test drive the new Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0 300 HP V8 (which, I believe, is the same chassis as the Suburban), and it's REALLY nice. You just have to be willing to spend double your $20k for the new Suburban

Re: Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion??? (ZD75blue)
The excursions are ok new, but after about 6 months the gas milege drops to 8 mpg on the gas engines, 10 on diesel, I don't know about the V-10 but I'd imagine it would be worse.
They are also horrible offroad, Ford designed then for the road, they were never meant to go off it, the soccer moms just want to look like they can go offroad, they never actually do, did you know that only 10% of people who buy trucks now adays has a need for them to go offroad ? (got that from peterson's offroad magazine) So if you don't go offroad and don't care about gas milage its a good truck :) with ALOT of storage in the back :)

Re: Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion??? (Flareside)
Thanks for the great opinions guys. Sales guy got me a little miffed today. I called back to tell him we'd take the car & he said he could go only $7,500 for my Sub and not $8,500. I told him to forget it and keep the Excursion. that was at 4PM.
Well He just called back a few minutes ago and said he'd go $8,300 tops. I told him I'd let him know.
Still sounds like a good deal for a Suburban that I just bought for $5,000 6 months ago. I think I'm gonna junp on it.
Question though. Why would he seem to have the hots to get rid of an Excursion which has a blue book of $29,000???
My wife thinks there's something wrong with the Excursion and this guy wants to get rid of it. Though it still has about 1.5 years of the factory warranty left and an addition powertrain warranty is available to (I think) 100,000 miles!
I talked to another sales guy in another dealership and he was totally baffled by the $8,500 offer. He said I shoulda jumped on it! He offered me $4,000 for my Sub!

Re: Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion??? (Anar76)
I don't have an Excursion but I do have a 01 F-250 4WD with the diesel motor and it gets about 16 mpg and I drive it with my foot in it! (have to with the diesel). It is the same chassis as the Excursion and my wife has no problems driving it, besides she doesn't bother to put fuel in it!
My wife used to drive a Toyota Corolla and she loved it. Then one day I was at a stop light in my truck with the wife and two little boys when all of a sudden,WHAM! we get rear ended by a new Jetta. Totaled out the Jetta and knocked my trailer light hookup off my bumper. I am not kidding, I even have pics somewhere if I knew how to post them! So right then I told my wife "you aint driving my boys in that *** trap anymore" and I went and got her a Expedition. She loves the thing and my kids are safer in it than the toyota.
I say get the Excursion, chip it, exhaust and don't even check the mileage. Oh yeah and don't listen to people who haven't even ridden in one!
Good luck, Eric.

Re: Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion??? (EricU)
I was just commenting to my wife the other day (not sure what made me even think of it!) that I have never seen a Ford Excursion driving around our town. This is a place where it seems 80% of the soccer moms are driving SUVs, mostly big SUVs, mostly Suburbans, with a fair sprinkling of big Lexuses, and a few Navigators, Jeep grand cherks, Range rovers, Landcruisers, Explorers etc... (there were more Expeditions when they first came out, but many ladies have traded in their Expeditions for Suburbans). Our very small local Chevy dealer boasts the most Suburban sales east of the Mississippi (dont know if this is really true).
Anyway, the lack of Excursions around here leads me to believe they must be really really big - too big to park downtown!! :) MJ

The 2001 should be mid 30's minus your trade and 2001 year rebate/cash back, and low new car finance...you could get a new one for about the same as the used one...I would suggest checking it out the used one for prior damage especially if you feel a bit ifyy about the dealers hurry to get rid of it...

Re: Opinions on a 2001 V-10 Excursion??? (EricU)
Eric---Thanks for the input. My wife will be driving the Excuresion primarily as she did the Suburban. Shes' been driving this size vehicle since we purchased a New Suburban in '89. Now, to her, everything else feels like a toy. I keep trying to get her to drive the Explorer but that'll only last a day or two. She feels much, much safer in the Sub.
MNJack---tight parking spaces and cramped downtown parking aren't an issue. She shops and works in the suburbs. If we need to venture into town, I either drive or she takes the Explorer.
Yes though the Excursion is 4 inches taller and 7 inches longer than the Sub.
Tony---we did check out a couple new 2001 and with the rebates and discounts($6000) we were still far from a price that we were willing to finance. I'm going to get the VIN and run it thru carfax too.

Sounds like you're getting the bus. I hope you enjoy it. It almost looks like you would have been better off asking about a GM product here. Funny how that works. Did you test drive it yet? I am wondering what your feelings on it are. My in-laws have an excusion and an expedition, and 2 97' ford 1 ton trucks with diesels for the business. I have driven them all and am absolutely in love with the expedition. Maybe I'll get one of those one day. :p: Better not, if my friends see me driving a Ford they'll all have a stroke. :D

I just checked out some new 2001 Limited's. The stock rear end is a 3.73???? Optional is either a 4.10 and 4.30 for $250!!! Yikes! No wonder milage is so bad. :yesnod:

Why not look into an Expedition?
I have a '99 EB Expo with a 5.4 litre.
Get 14.2 MPG on average.
2 1/2 years..no problems.
We love it!
