Default Rear End Chatter Question

Im dropping of my car to the dealer tomorrow morning to remedy the rear-end chatter noise...I have a few questions:

1. How long will it take...Is it something I can wait for or should I expect to leave it all day. They told me to come in at 7:00am.

2. They seem pretty familiar with the issue and the fix. I know there have been quite a few KINDS of fixes. What has been the BEST fix thus far and/or what should I request them to do or NOT to do.

3. Those of you who have gone through this...Has the problem come returned?

4. Is the fix free?

5. Is there usually any damage to the rear associated with the noise?

Thanks!

I bought my C6 in August of 2006 brand new. The chatter began about 6 months later. I took it in to the dealership (I had an appointment), and it took about an hour. It could be done quicker, but there seemed to be no rush.
No cost.
I waited.
No return chatter!
No damage.
They are probably going to do THEIR fix, regardless of YOUR ideas. From what I read, they don't go to plan B until exhausting plan A a few times.
Very easy, except for the anxiety over the lifting. I made sure beforehand that they were aware of cracking rocker panels from incorrect lifting. They assured me thay had done Vettes many times and knew how they needed to be lifted. (This was before buying a puck set.) They did good.
Good luck.

In order of the question:
1) it takes about an hour to do.
2)The latest fluid, dexron LS (88862624) part number, will do the trick.
3)Should be gone with the latest fluid
4)Its under warranty as long as the car still is
5)No damage

I had mine fixed at the dealer. They put the Dexrol fluid in and it resolved the chatter issue almost 100%. I waited for the car, did not take too long...maybe an hour or an hour and a half. I found the TSB here on the Forum and took it with me. The service guy was surprised I knew so much. I'd advise you do a search and take it with you too.

Also, I asked (in a nice pleasant way) if they knew for sure how to lift a Corvette. I explained I had heard some horror stories where the rocker panel got busted up by dealers...he laughed and assured me they knew what they were doing. I felt better just knowing that he knew that I knew! BTW: mine Dexrol was covered under warranty. Hope this helps...good luck.

Be advised that there is an updated TSB on this condition that utilizes the new DEXRON® LS gear oil, P/N 88862624.

Only thing, regarding question 1, though it may take only an hour (or less) to do, that doesn't mean you should assume the dealer will have your car ready in an hour... car might sit in the lot all day before they get to it, etc... you better ask them directly.

I had my oil changed yesterday and immediately took the Vette on a 250 mile drive. On the way out I started to hear a sound that I'd never heard before. Almost sounded a little like teeth chattering. I remembered reading about some type of "Chattering" issue here. Is this an accurate description of the beginning of the chattering rear end problem? It seemed to only be an issue on rougher pavement. Once I got back onto smooth pavement, it went away. My original warranty expires in a few months...so now is the time to get this taken care of.

Thanks

Probably not the same thing. The rearend chatter is mostly heard when making a slow turn at near full lock. There are other symptoms that can arise, but that is the most obvious.

You guys are the best...Thanks for the info.

1 last question...Should I ask specifically for DEXRON or is this the standard procedure now?

Thanks,

I've just got the pre-factory warranty expiration jitters....even though I do have an exteded warranty, I'd rather get these things knocked out under the original.

I bought my '06 in July '06 went through the clutch pack change and a few months later the noise came back. I just recently took it back and this time the dealer replaced the fluid with the NEW formula. So far so good.

Yes it should be a warranty item.

Good luck,

I agree. Once it is done, you should be good to go.

I would specifically ask for "DEXRON® LS gear oil, P/N 88862624" since that seems to be the most effective solution.

In ebay a week ago there was a yellow 2008 Corvette GM Buy Back for sale that had a bad rearend. The dealer said they finally fixed it by an issued service memo from GM telling them what to do. Maybe the memo said "Replace it" They didn't go into details. It was a $55,000 car and the bid was up to about $25,000.

Make sure you either tell the service writer or take a copy of the updated TSB (1/08) that calls for the Dexron LS 75W-90 Gear Lube. I did just that and the service guy still was going to put in the older fluid and the additive. I caught him in time though. My '07 was starting to chatter pretty bad and the fluid change has completely smoothed it out.

IMHO having done this .... it doesn't remedy the problem. It does however lessen the intensity of the clunk and the chatter. I do believe the amoils and slip lock route is a better solution. IMHO.

Is the chatter destructive to the diff, or just an annoyance?

OK to drive with chatter, if it doesn't bother me?
