Need opinion on wiring neutral saftey switch????
The switch is there but not wired. In speaking with my trusty parts guy who used to own a vette, he suggest just splicing the wire from the ignition switch to the starter into the safety switch. This will act as an interupt and the car won't start until the clutch is depressed (sort of like a kill switch but using the safety switch). I can't see any reason not to do this. Originally GM created a seperate circuit for this, but the end result would be the same - no depressed clutch, no start. Anyone know why I should not do this? One of my friends tried to start the car thinking it was an automatic. The shift pattern is covered by a wood grain console cover. Kind of makes the car look like an automatic. Anyway, when he did this the tranny locked up. I certainly want to avoid this in the future. The saftey switch would be the trick.

I wired mine in the same way. I ran the wire that went to the solenoid through the clutch switch. No push clutch no start.

Mines bypassed, nobody else starts my car, so I don't care..... And yes I have tried starting it with the car in gear... no cancel that.... I have started my car in gear, not a fun ride.
P.S. I don't learn fro my mistakes that well :D

Install the swith between the neutral safety switch wire and it will also act as a theft proof switch for your vette! :D I think you should do both

Will the switch handle the draw from the solenoid? Maybe through a relay to be safe.

Bob,
Good question, however I think the answer is yes. The original wiring had two connections. One wire from the safety switch to the ignition switch. The second was from the starter solenoid directly to the safety switch. GM built this safety switch to handle a direct connect to the starter.

I'm a little confused here.
If you have the neutral switch and the plugs, why not plug the switch into the existing harness? Isn't that what the switch is for?

Techno,
The switch is there but the plug is not. My car was originally a 73, but a vette resto shop completely rebuilt the car as a 1980 including rewiring with a 1980 wiring harness. However, they left a few connections out including the safety switch. Not sure why the plug is not in the harness, but its not there. I have to make my own plug by splicing from the ignition switch to the starter instead of creating a new circuit.
