What year car and what motor size. For small blocks the lower bracket mounts on both the engine, exhaust manifold and also on the engine where it meets the brace.

I have a 71 small block. A brace attaches at the top of the alternator and serves as the belt adjustment. The top alternator bolt can be loosened and the alternator belt tension adjusted by moving the alternator through the slot in the brace. The lower bracket has a pivot bolt and attaching bolt. I believe that both are bolted into the exhaust manifold. check out a parts catalogue or assembley manual for details. I'm pretty sure 69 and 71 are the same for the alternator set-up. Hope this helps. You may want to make sure that you have the correct lower bracket (or manifold) if the holes don't line up.

On my 69, the lower bracket bolted directly into two bolt holes on the front of the head.

it will line up w/ 2 bolt holes on the head..but where the 2 holes come off the exhaust manifold interfere with the bracket being bolted on....im guessing i have the bracket made for mounting to the head...and have to find one for mounting to the manifold right?

I got this from the Forums Mall section - Zip Products... Maybe it will help.
It is however different from the set up in my car. On my lower bracket. both bolts go directly into the head. My car has been through hell and back, so I cant be sure mine is Stock.
Hope that helps some!

i just bolted the long alternator bolt straight to the manifold w/ a washer as a spacer...then used the long adjustable arm. I didnt use any other brackets and everything seems to line up...the belt fits, alternatler is firmly mounted...is there anything wrong with doing it this way?
