Carb ID: Numbers Don't Make Sense (Lars, you out there?)
Not according to anything I can find anyway.
I'm finally getting around to tuning this thing, and I'm looking at tech tip #1 on Lars Grimsrud's "How to Tune a Q-Jet (basic)" paper dated 10/4/01, which suggest starting with a carb that is set up to specs according to the carb's number. Since according the the carb number this isn't the original one for my car's application, my first step is to see what it came off of. That way I can cross it to Lars's sheet on jet and rod sizes to ensure mine's set up to spec.
But the number on the carb doesn't cross to anything I can find. Here's the numbers as they appear on the carb:
17054923
2844
According to everything I can find, the "176" part of the number says this should be a '76 and later carb. But I'm not sure what the "54" part of the number indicates. And I'm also not sure what the "9" indicates. And I see conflicting info on whether the "2" indicates this is a Chevy or Cadillac carb.
And when I input the number into the carbs.net general info section for identification, it tells me this carb is off of a '71 chey/gm/gmc trk/avanti.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
