Default Generator light in my '79

It stays on, even though the system is charging fine. Has anyone seen this problem before? Where should I start looking? Thanks!

Disco the connector from the alternator. If the light goes out it might be a bad diode in the alternator. Have it bench checked. If it stays on, then the wiring has found a ground is making the light iluminate. lou

Generator? Sure it isn't a 59 Vette? All joking aside, that is usually the sign of an alternator going bad.

If you have to replace it go with a higher amp like 85 Stock units were under 60 I think.

Yep, the light says "GEN". Seems to charge fine. Headlights are bright, and it starts well. It's going in for a heater core replacement next week. I'll have the mechanic look for shorts while he's got the dash apart. I just don't have the patience to tackle the heater core and the mechanic says he can do it for $350.

GM still used "GEN" on their warning lights for many years, even after converting over to alternators. My '77 Camaro even had one.

A easy check is to place a screw driver to the back of the alternater near the bearing. engine off it should be slightly magnetic. Engine on highly magnetic.

I'm wondering if it could be an over voltage instead of no volts. Does a gen light come on when the voltage reg dies?

BTW generating stations that produce your home electricity use generators, even though they are alternators. Go figure.

A new alternator solved the problem.
