EASY C3 odometer gears replacement paper now available!! lotsa huge pics!!
well the darkness came.... and i got bored...
so i decided to do this paper since i dont think anyone else has done it???
and odometer gears is a very common C3 problem also!!
ill try and get it posted over at corvettefaq.com and here too if i can....
but for the meantime, here is it!!!
http://grove.ufl.edu/~dreksler/odometer.doc
it is a bit big, ~471K but theres lotsa huge pictures...
NOTE: this method shows how you can replace BOTH odometer gears without removing the needle, and without full dissasembly.... whole thing takes like 10 min, if that....

Got the 2nd worm gear (hidden) loose but can't remove it without removing the 1st worm gear. Unlike your description (unless I'm reading it wrong), the ends (pins) of my 1st worm gear extend through the front and back of the housing. It appears the only way to seperate the housing so I can remove the gear is to remove the metal bar that the face attaches to but it is press fit into the housing with a pin on each end. It doesnt budge.
Any ideas?

Re: EASY C3 odometer gears replacement paper now available!! lotsa huge pics!! (mdsmith)
pins??
all the speedos i have seen (5 of them so far :) ) have screws which can be accessed through the "bright" hole in the speedo face...
looses the face plate and spin the face plate around while looking through the "bright hole" (the one i circled in green) and youll be able to unscrew those 2 screws holding the top bar in place..
once that top bar is able to slide out, then youll be able to remove the 1st gear...
then follow my method to remove the 2nd gear.... if its not broken then use a screwdriver to pop out the circulor disk (without removing the cylindrical thingie...)
if its broken then get a long metal rod and push it out with that.

Doooooohhhh! Sorry I tried to delete my braindead post but you responded too fast. I got it...the screw heads were covered in this slimy dirty grease and I didn't really look hard enough. Removed the screws and everything fell out on the counter. The 1st gear was trashed on the inside end. Unlike the plastic ones, both worm gears in my speedo are steel.
Thanks, Dude...really appreciate the help. Saved me some $$$$.

I seem to be unable to download this information. I am getting the following message: Graphics Conversion Filter not installed. What do I need to do?? I run Office 97 Professional for Win95 on WinXP. It seems to work fine.

Re: EASY C3 odometer gears replacement (silvervetteman)
when u picked the install options, you need to select all the graphics conversion filters/ also its a good idea to install all the "other" file conversions (wordperfect etc...)
this .doc file has .jpeg images in it./

Re: EASY C3 odometer gears replacement paper now available!! lotsa huge pics!! (daily_driver)
Great article. It inspired me to repair the odometer on my 70 coupe which quit a few years ago. I have the speedo out and in hand. Just a few questions before I go further.
What you describe as the 1st white odo gear (mine is black) looks in good shape. When I turn the speedo cable area by hand, it does not move tho. It seems that the 2nd gear under the cylindrical can is not driving it to make it turn. I looked at the end of the 2nd gear and it turns when I rotate the cable piece. It seems to me all I have to do is replace this 2nd gear.
My question is... do I have to remove the 1st gear to get the 2nd one out and push the new one in? If I don't have to remove the 1st gear, then I don't have to remove any screws on the face plate. Right.
Thanks for your time in helping me with this.

Re: EASY C3 odometer gears replacement paper now available!! lotsa huge pics!! (bhawk)
bhawk::
sorry for not respoding sooner, but i just got back from vacation!!
if you have the odometer out, go ahead and replace both of the gears!!! before they self destruct.... its a ~4 dollar part...
both of the gears are easy to replace....
you say the 2nd gear under the can is turning when viewing the end?? (you can use a drill to drive the speedo when u have it out...)...
if that gear is turning and the 1st one is not, i would still go ahead and replace both gears...... the bottom gear (2nd) probably has grooves worn in it, but the 1st gear can be viewed pretty easily --as to its condition... its a cheap part though, and how many times u wanna tear apart the dash?? heheheh
to get the gears to mesh correctly, the 2nd gear should be installed 1st with the 1st one removed...
when removing the screws, just be sure to be very gentle with the face plate so u dont chunk off the needle!! have something to support the whole unit by the housing so u dont rest the unit on the faceplate and unit together which might bend the needle or worse break it!!
btw: in your email u asked about the other gear.... i have an extra housing if you need it!! drop me a line
good luck with it!!
