New Best 1/4 Mile Times
Well after exploding the 4.11 gears and replacing them with 3.70 gears I assumed my times would be a little worse. I was expecting a drop of about 2 tenths. Since I was running average of 13.2 with the 4.11 gears I was expecting about 13.5 or so. Well you can cancel all that. I ran a best of 12.74 at 110 with backing that up with 2 more 12.7s and two 12.8s at 109ish mph. Go figure. To the best of my thinking I was in the power band more. The drop from 3rd to 4th is a lot and I am in 3rd longer now. My 60 foot improved also. I made 4 passes in the 1.9x range before I was doing good to get a high 2.0. The weather was perfect cool and no humidity so that helped but I thought the cool temps would make launching it worse. The only thing different beside the gears was I left out the spare tire and tube. This saved a few pounds but not enough to make that kind of difference, Needless to say I was smiling all hte way home. :) :) :)

Joe with the hardtop I'm good to 11.99. Atco does not hassle me when doing time shots with the soft top. I suppose if I was deep in the 11s they would say Bye Bye.
Mike i saw Edgar at the track he said the party was great. I did not expect to see you that early. I was there at 9.15. You were I'm sure working off the brew from last night at that time

nastee383, The 1/8 mile was at 8.270 and 8.296 with a speed of 88.07 and 87.78. Those were my two best. i suppose if I could get the 60 foot time down to your 1.7s i would be around an 8.0 to 8.1. Better tires would help. Something more to strive for.

It goes against everything I beleive, but I have to congradulate you for running faster with taller gears. Maybe the 4.11's were over'revving you in the 1/4? At what rpm did you cross the finish line with the 4.11's and now the 3.70's?

Thanks for the info. If you're doing those times on regular street tires, that's stout. On my 8 oh pass my mph was only 84.5 so some Drag Radials or ET Streets would probably get you 2 or 3 tenths, maybe more.

Re: New Best 1/4 Mile Times (Stingy74)
Stingy, I was crossing the line with 4.11 at about 5600 rpm with the 3.70 about 5200. I shift it at 6500. I think the reason it is faster is the drop from 3rd to 4th really drops the rpm. I am in 3rd longer now so the motor is working longer in the powerband. It goes against everything I thought also. I thought I would lose about 3 tenths. Maybe it is the masterful driving (yea right). I thought it was a fluke but I had 5 runs all 12.8 to 12.7. Hope it continues next year

Gordon, is your car a auto or manual? and what were your shift points before and after you changed the gears? what were your old mphs?

The car has a wide ratio Muncie in it. I have always shifted it at 6500. I have a 6400 pill in the shift light so by the time I see it and react I think it is at 6500. It has made the car or me very consistant. Plus you can keep your eyes on the track or road. Never even look at the tach anymore while racing. Just to launch. My previous best mph was 108.

Well, it's obvious by looking at your mph that you gained 20 horsepower somewhere. You are probably right, the 3.70's just may keep you in the power band a little better, thus using more of your potential horsepower. I'm waiting to see how my 4.56's will react in the 1/4 with the engine I built to rev to 7000. I've made the calculations and that seems to be the right gear. We'll see.
