Default All vettes after 70 have posi rear ends?????

On Jenny`s post "8' black marks"
At the bottom of the post someone said all Vettes after 70 have posi rear ends. My question is. One my 80 the tag said limited slip. On my 76 the book say`s posi but again the tag on the rear end say`s limited slip
Can any one clear up my fog??

By the way I pulled the tag off my expedition last night and took the Vette to the gas station. :nono:
What fun it was!!! :reddevil

Posi. is short for positraction & what Chevy calls it's Limited Slip, so is the same thing.

Thanks Ganey, I grew up thinking Posi = both wheels spin. Limited slip = one at a time spin.
Thanks Bob

ganey explanation is right , however GM probably didn't want to be sued because if you measure those two 8' foot strips one is 1/2 inch shorter Thus limited slip. :) It slipped for a split second for cluches to engage.:) (POSI TRACTION IN TH 50's was when you welded the spider gears)

Positraction are synonomous. Posi is usually attributed to straight line acceleration whereby given EQUAL conditions both wheels apply the same # of revolutions over a given distance. The "limited slip" name is more applicable under cornering when one wheel is allowed to slip since the distance (arc) travelled by each is wheel different requiring a different amount of revolutions to maintain traction & handling. Thats why spools (that lock both axles) are not the best for street vehicles.

Limited slip is a lockable differential. They claim it will send power to the wheel that is on a non-slippery surface instead of just spinning the "icy" wheel. I have never seen this happen, the unit locks up instead and becomes a non-differential. Both wheels revolve together whether on a turn or not. Whether one is on ice and the other is on pavement. This is released after the event that caused it is gone.
If you spin a posi in a turn it locks up and spins both wheels. This is handy for steering with the rear end rather than the front.

Posi-traction is a trademark of chevys. Fords don't use posi-traction because they have thier own name for it, forgot what it is. But it is still limited slip.
