Have an opportunity to get a 454 truck engine in the $200 cdn range, anything that I should know, it is running now he just wants it gone for storage reasons.

A lot of the time it depends how big the truck was as a half ton motor is usually the same. best get the casting # and check on the http://www.motec.com site and check. Some of the bigger trucks have what they call a tall block and you can tell them from looking at if you know where to look.:)

Trucks usually came with 'peanut port' heads that are good for nothing. Much smaller ports than oval ports and can't be ported enough to make power.

The block is fine as long as it's not a tall deck.

Most likely it's not a tall deck, many of the older trucks came with the "Hi-Perf Pass" stamped in them. To positively identify it you will need to run the casting numbers off of the block to be 100% sure. If nothing else, it would be worth it for the block and crank. The heads are most likely the smaller oval port heads and are of no use to you.

don't be too quick on the heads issue, My 454 is out of a 1972 utility bed pickup and it was a two bolt oval port motor. Lives a quiet happy life in my Camaro. Head casting numbers would be usefull too. I may be mistaken but I think the tall deck motors came in the super heavy duty stuff like dump trucks, busses and large flatbeds and stuff.

don't all 'TRUCK' blocks have deck height .400 taller?

Turbo-Jet:
No, that is a common misconception amongst most people. Just because an engine is in a truck does NOT mean that it is a "truck block" (tall deck). The 427 blocks are what you have to be weary of. There are very few 454 blocks in circulation that are tall deck blocks. Check out http://www.mortec.com , I browsed through the casting numbers and only found two 454 blocks that were tall decks....and they were both made after '90 (1 was a crate engine).

BTW I just helped my buddy pull a 350 out of a truck....it turned out to be a normal passenger car block.
