Here's this infamous 406....
Heh... it's actually powering a Jag XKE...
What do y'all think? He wants $2000 as is, or $3500 rebuilt.... I would not pay more than $2000 to my door if i decided to go along with it. Let me know what you guys think... more pics on the way hopefully!!!
On another note, i went to a shop here and got quoted about 3200 for a Shortblock. That will handle 425hp. Just to bring things into perspective.

well im a big fan on 400,s lots of torque but like before yoll have to find out why she was running hot also..but for another grand you could drop a new crate motor in with no troubles at all....just a thought.

Jenny,
You're buying a pig in a poke. The perspectives you got on the engine mods board didn't really send you in a specific direction either. If (heavy emphasis on the if) everything is as the seller says then it's not a bad deal if only for the sum of its parts. The problem is that you won't be able to verify anything the seller says until the engine is dripping oil on your driveway. It's easy for the seller to say an engine has this and that parts and if you don't pull the pan before the cash changes hands, then you have live with what you got or anguish over it. Personally, I would pass on this engine only for the reason that I would insist the seller pull the pan so that I could inspect the bottom end. It is your choice and you are the only one who's going to be out $2k bucks if this deal goes bad or the only one who will be dancing in the streets like a peasant with fresh meat if this engine is the deal of the century.

The engine may not be rebuildable- depends on cylinder wall wear. You would need a moneyback guarantee if the walls are worn.
Since it's already bored, it may have to be sleeved... if there is not enough meat left for sleeves (water-jacket intrusion), it could be a boat anchor. Sleeves may bring it back below a 406, and you'd need new pistons. Be careful.

Jenny, run away! I don't think it's a good idea to buy an engine that you don't know the history of from somebody that you don't know. You might luck out, but you probably won't. For $800 I'd think about it, for $2000 you can get a 330 hp GM crate, brand new with a warranty! For his "rebuilt" price, you can get a new ZZ4.
This would be a bad purchase...

I keep with my opinion that you should work with the engine you have now. Its a nice 4bolt block that can handle 450+hp easily. Keep the crank, keep the rods, get new pistons and you have a shortblock for less than 500$. Now, THATS a deal. I really don't see why you want to get a new block...doesn't make sense.

Jenny talk to Tom454 about a 383 stroker, he seems to know what he's talking about and is in your neck of the woods. Just my 2c. :D

I had already scheduled a "training session" for some other local college students in my area, and Jenny has been invited and intends to be there. We'll be tearing down a Chevy 350 (donated by MELVIN) and we will be going over basic engine building tools as well. The cam selection and high horsepower buildup questions will be left to you guys & gals. The collective talent on the forum is a good asset. I'm just covering the basics this time around.

I wouldn't give up on building a 406. By starting with ~50 more cubes than a 350, you will be getting 50 more hp and torque for the same price as building a 350. It sounds like you want a fairly powerful engine.
I would sell your existing motor and use the proceeds to buy a good 400 block, a scat cast internal balance crank, Eagle h beam rods, and SRP forged pistons. Add a good set of heads (like Air Flow Research), good induction (Edelbrock RPM or Weiand 7530), and a 750 dbl pump holley, and you will be well on your way to 500 hp and 500ft/lbs at the flywheel with a relatively mild cam. I am currently building up a 406 ci engine for my 74 with the above pieces. I am also going to run a roller cam.
Go to AFR's web site for some different engine combos. Good luck!!
