Horsepower gain with carb spacers??
"If you use carb spacers, which set the carb higher over the manifold this will cause an increasement of the air/fuel mixture velocity which gains HP."
Is this true, and even noticable?
Havn´t seen a car with such a spacer yet, but the idea seems logical to me...
Is this the reason why the performer rpm manifold is much higher than the performer

Hey Marcus_P, im not 100% sure about this, but i can also understand how this is true. I have heard these claims before, and have seen many cars with throotle bodies also using them. I just dont believe you will gain real noticeably horsepower, but that just my opinion where as reality may be different

Re: Horsepower gain with carb spacers?? (MARKUS_P)
The spacers increase plenum volume and insulate the carb from heat. Both of these can be a good thing. If you have a dual plane intake now, look for a divided spacer to maintain your low end power, or an open spacer if you're willing to give up some low end to gain top end HP. The gains and losses are not much, think of it more as a tuning tool for drag racers. You will have to be at the drag strip to really see the changes if everything is properly tuned. The Edlebrock manifolds are made the way they are for hood clearance. I suspect that the changes from one to the other are real close to the gain from adding a spacer to the performer.

Re: Horsepower gain with carb spacers?? (MARKUS_P)
I have seen back to back dyno tests where they have lost horsepower and others with only about 1 hp difference. Some of the gain or lose has to do with the distance from the carb flange to the bottom of the intake plenum. If this distance is too short the gas mixture charge has trouble making the turn into the runners so a spacer will aid this turn by making it longer. If this distance is already optimal the spacer will do nothing.

I think that the only real benefit is to shield the heat from the carb...by using wood or phelonic(sp)...spacers..which is a type of plastic

I put 1/2" of spacers under my crossfire tbi's after removing the famous swirl plates and port matching the manifold. The spacers got rid of the "fuel puddling" problem because of the tight turn between the base of the tbi and the manifold floor. Really smoothed out performance. I think this is just what Norvell was mentioning on a manifold with a restricted plenum. Mine were cheap - two, CNC machined aluminum for a total of $25!

SuperFast80, thanks. I just browsed it, but I think that's the best article I've seen on spacers. It's getting printed out when I get home. :yesnod:

I'm using a TD aluminum step spacer now. When I bought it I was merely looking to raise the carb to meet my L-88 air chamber. I added a one inch spacer. I really can't say I noticed any change in HP! I've read or heard that spacers will increase the HP & torque about 10%---BUT this increase is further up the RPM band and I'm already using a single plane manifold(Bubba installed)!
For me visist to 5000+ RPM are few and far between...at least until I get my '70 to a point where I won't cringe at the thought.

Be prepared to buy a high rise hood also. I have an L88 hood, and even with that I have to use a drop base air cleaner with an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap and a 1 inch spacer on a small block.

Nice test, do you have some tests on K/N filters too?

Re: Horsepower gain with carb spacers?? (Lasse)
Instead of running a tall spacer i installed the Taller 7532 Weiand team -G which extended the RPM from 7200 to 7800 and I use a 1/2 wood spacer for het protection to the carb.
Every motor/cam combo will react differently. Than the above test.

I have a 1/4" wood spacer under my Speed Demon 850 carb and L88 drop base, with Air Gap Intake and L88 hood with fresh air. Dont know how much (if any) hp gain i got...but i like the idea of keeping the air/fuel charge as cool as possible.

Thanks for the great info, Superfast.
I greatly appreciate that you´re collecting all the tests and infos for our vettes.
Markus
BTW for all those who are interested in the TD step spacer (think this one is the best for most of our combos) here´s a link
http://www.tdperformance.com/TDperfrm.html
Would be interested in the price....
