Default Z-bar or Bellcrank?

This may purely be an issue of semantics.

I have always referred to the clutch bellcrank or z-bar referred to as a bellcrank.

Which is it? Is it a Bellcrank or a Z-bar? All early literature I have for various chevy's points to Bellcrank.

Never heard of the word bell crank. I have called the bar for the clutch linkage a z-bar. That is also how Car Craft refers to this part. I just did a resto job on my to solve a tranny problem.

Regards,

Jim

I think it's a matter of age. If you started fooling with cars in the '50's, it's a bellcrank. I never heard the term Z-bar until I joined the forum last year.

I've never heard of the term 'z-bar' until about 2 minutes ago. :D And I went to engineering school and everything! TWICE!

Bell crank is an aeronautical term....... Clutch cross shaft is the proper nomenclature, I believe. My 2c.

Yep, that's what the service manual calls it at least... I call it that $50 part that I just had to replace :)

Ok, I learned how to work on cars from old timers (all who have now passed on, with the exception of my dad :(). I tend to use 40's and 50's terminology when working with cars. Guess this explains it.

These guys (Zip) call it a "cross shaft"..... so I guess it's a Zbar! :)

Bell crank is an aviation term. I can tell you from experience that their is a poopieload of them on a DC-8.

Before you install your z-bar or bell crank, take it down to a welder and have him weld a couple of gussets in the corners. It's mucho stronger & it looks racy too :D
