TurboDiesel Vette
Has anyone else heard anything about a possible turbo diesel available on the next gen C7 and perhaps sooner in the 2010 C6 model. I read this at in a magazine while waiting for my flight at the Seattle Airport, it was a technology magazine (can't recall the name)
While at the 12hrs of Sebring, I overheard the guys at Pratt& Miller discusing a TD V8 for the C6R, but with all the noice I missed most of the details
With Audi going to a v12 diesel on the R8, with 738lb of torque, and MB and BMW offering in Europe turbo diesels with amazing hp and torque.
Peugeot, and Audi are pushing the envelope in diesel development for high performance applications, and MB is offering a 4 cyl twin turbo diesel on their S models next year with amaizing power numbers.
The head of MB stated that high performance will come from diesels in the near future.
Mitsubishi will offer the Eclipce in a 2.0 Td with 300lbs of torque.
Perhaps GM may be going TD as well.

He tells me his contact was extremely enthusiatic about it and even cuoted him.."brutal brutal torque, over 600 lbs in the middle of the rev range" and of course the customary " you did not hear that from me.
So $4.00 or not a gallon diesel power is coming, I personally do not drive a Vette for the fuel economy. Sign me up on the waiting list

I don't really care what the fuel is as long as the performance is there....

I drove a turbo diesel audi on the autobahn. Very impressive.
The technology in europe dwarfs what we have. I'd take a well engineered turbo diesel over a hybrid any day of the week.

You should hear the Audi R10 TDI race car, at full throtle you can't hardly hear it comming or going, you just hear the tires protesting the 811 lbs of torque at 2000rpms.
MB 320TDI's make less noise than the gas counterpart. go figure.

If they can't handle LS7 torque with an auto, how are they going to handle 600? And what nobody talks about with diesels is that they are heavy (to say nothing of noisy and smelly). No thanks.

I've seen what the new diesel technology can do...bottom line is ..it will be hear soon...but you don't have to buy one...well maybe not till you see one blow by. We all have choices.

LS7 don't come AUTO, the weight is about the same, and the smell is gone,,,, this is 2007, not 1983

I have nothing against the new high tech diesel's. What I wonder about it the sound? One of the things I really enjoy about our V8's is that great sound. Hard to imagine driving a vette that sounds like a Hoover vacuum cleaner. I guess it's just what we've grown used to but I really would hate to lose the sound of these great engines...... I would imagine if these high performance diesel's catch on after market exhaust mfgs will really take a beating?

I like the idea and hope Chevy runs with it. I would buy one. I drive a diesel now and have a diesel 3/4 ton Chevy. Can they reduce the weight of the engine? A turbo diesel with less displacement than the current car would be faster. A major problem would be getting that power to the pavement via a 3200 pound car. I see more electronics here.
No smoke and no smell. Only power.
The exhaust can be tuned for good sound.
The car would get great fuel mileage on trips.

A diesel will never make the same power as a gas engine, pound for pound, or dollar for dollar. There's a reason it mostly hasn't been used is passenger cars for the last 80 years. It is an inferior choice. The ONLY reason to use a diesel is if you need exceptionally high torque (as in a heavy truck) or you need higher fuel economy. And of course the latter is the only reason they are being considered now.
The only reason the Audi R10 is competitive is that the minimum weight of the class was increased and the gasoline engines have tighter restrictions on boost. The LS7 makes 505 hp and weighs 458 pounds dry. The 3 liter TDI V6 makes 240 hp and weighs 482 pounds. Wow, such a deal. When diesels can run even in any sprint race series, without higher minimum weights, and with the same boost restrictions, then I'll get interested. It might happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

After contacting a life long friend that happens to be a General Manager of a major Chevy dealer in south Florida (he also sold me my C6) I showed him the story on the link. He made some phone calls, to high ups in Bowling Green, he call me and told me it was not a April fools joke and that there are serious about a TD V8 power plant, its under development, but it won't be for 09 model year.
He tells me his contact was extremely enthusiatic about it and even cuoted him.."brutal brutal torque, over 600 lbs in the middle of the rev range" and of course the customary " you did not hear that from me.
