newbie with a 1982 need some tips
I just turned 16 a month ago and i got a 1982 corvette. I know a little about cars but not much. Can anyone give me some tips on what I can do to improve my car's performance and speed. I know this car has power but like everyone else I want to go for more. Any tips on what I should do to start out would be great. I can't find any sites that give help to newbies. All the sites just help the people that already know what they're doing. Thanks a lot.

Ok pimp, this is your father speaking. So listen up!
First off your 82 has 200 HP. stock, and that's more than enough to get into trouble with. You need to learn to drive it with what's in it first. Find your local vette club and join in on the activity's, espiecially the autocross.
You need to learn the limits of your car on a closed course and not the street, you have to keep the integrity of all of us corvette people intact.
That means NO street racing, or showing off for your friends.
Drive it like it was a pinto ( no power, or handling )...
If you can keep it in one piece for a couple of years, (no dents, wrecks, or tickets), then you can start to think about modifying you vette...
We now return you to your regulerly schedualed program

Re: newbie with a 1982 need some tips (pimpdidyyo)
I can remember turning 16 and wanting to go 200 miles and hour and blaze down the quarter mile in 10 seconds. I am now 35 and still want to do the same thing. Going fast is really just a matter of time and money. How fast you want to go is a direct relationship to how much time you have and how much money you are willing or able to spend. Here is your hot rodders short course for not alot of money.
Get a freeflowing airfilter like a K&N $75.00
Get a freeflowing exhaust system $500.00
Get a better rear end gear something around 3.73 $500.00
Make sure she is in good tune.
Dont forget your brakes in search of more power.
Keep wheels balanced and front end aligned.
By all means change your oil and observe regular maintenance
Read all you can and take it slow.
Enjoy and save the rest of your money for college.
Welcome to the Forum your in the right place to learn alot. :seeya

Re: newbie with a 1982 need some tips (tnt76vette)
don't worry, im a safe driver and i don't plan to go race it in the streets. Just having it makes my friends jealous. I don't need to race it to prove anything. I just thought it would be a good experience to learn about cars and my cousin said this would be a good place to get some tips. So any tips that would help me learn about my car would be nice.

Yeah -- drive it "gently" alright !!
But Pimp- he is right. NO STREET RACING !!
Racing is for the track only. Get with a local Corvette group in your area. Go to http://www.vette.org , follow the links to NCCC and then find the links to clubs in your area.
Also check out SCCA for autocross racing. That is the best way to learn your car.
Learn what it will do, improve YOUR skills before improving the cars.
Besides, it's cheaper than all those mods. (I know)

Re: newbie with a 1982 need some tips (Desertdawg)
I heard that some of the things I can do are change my headers, exhaust, and airfilter. Can someone tell me about those are and what changing them would do? Thanks

Re: newbie with a 1982 need some tips (pimpdidyyo)
I dont want to over simplify for you but basically your engine is one big airpump. A KN airfilter will allow it to breath air better. Headers, and a new exhaust system will allow it to get rid of spent exhaust gases easier. The better you can make your engine flow air in, and flow air out the better it will run. IE you will be making more HP and Torq. These simple mods are where you should start. Although probably the most bang you could get for the buck is a rear end gear change. Hope this helps. Please dont flame me guys for the over simplification.
