What is a safe RPM limit for a stock ls1 short block that has good heads, 238/640 cam, headers and some other stuff, plus a built automatic. 6200? 6500?

6800-7000 depending on the year below 00 and below 6800 01 and up 7000....youre going to need some RPM for that cam

Unless you've done rod bolts, I'd say safe is 6200.

My stock bottom end 2001 sees 7000 rpm often. Not been a problem yet.

I'm not guaranteeing a failure can't happen at or below that point, just sharing my experience.

I set my rev limited on the conservative side in my 460RWHP stock bottom end 346 build. 6600 RPM. No sense tempting fate.

On my forged 403 build I still leave it low at 6800RPM.

With 3.90's my shifts still leave me in the power band.

Based on your profile you have a pre-2001 vette and one of the known issues with them are weak rod bolts. I would not venture to much past the stock rev limit unless you upgrade the rod bolts.

FYI - Katech makes a replacement rod bolt that is a simple swap out.

6500 unless you have the light wt sodium filled valves, titanium seats and better springs, then 72-7500, say 7000 to be safe.

The OP profile shows he has a 97 shortblock... I don't care what kind of valvetrain he has, 7200 is waaaay too high to be "SAFE".

Wow, you guys rev your cars to the moon! SAfe for an extended period of time, nowhere near 7k. I personally don't like going over 6600 max if you want long term safety, and on my own cars I don't go past 6400

Umm I did mention 6500 UNLESS there are light wt sodium filled valves and better springs.

Now that said, GM did RPM tests a few times, a 1999 LS1 did 100 continuous hours at 6500 rpms with NO problems and the 2001 LS6 at 6900 rpms for 100 continuous hours with no problems

you crazy? stock ls6 redline is 6600....6200 is stock ls1....upgraded springs and cam....easy 6800 on 97-00's....7000 on 01 up due to the upgraded bolts...you guys worry too much...your only at 6800 for like 3 seconds anyways

btw if you dont want to spin high...pick a different cam because that one will peak 6500ish and you want your redline a few hundred rpms above peak power
