Default How difficult to change the rotors on a '94 4WD Explorer??

I know this probably belongs in another section, but you guys here are more knowledgable mechanically.
I know the C-3 guys are more "hands-on" than some of the other sections.
My front rotors on my explorer are scored---calipers froze I guess. How hard is it to change the rotors? I have the Haynes manual and it looks like I'll need to buy a special socket for the wheel bearing adjusting nut. It looks to be within my realm of ability. I have a large collection of Craftsman hand tools with the exception of engine rebuild specialty tools.

I've done a lot of repairs on various vehicles over the years but never tackled a 4WD hub/rotor. Should I attempt or send to the shop?

Thanks
Len

I don't know if the fact that it is 4WD makes a difference but here's what I found on my '94 Taurus. First of all, Ford's calipers are slightly different from other's that I've experienced. It's a two piece design. If only the pads are being changed, the caliper is removed from the mount. If the rotor has to come off, the mount for the caliper has to be removed as well. It's not a hassle either way, just different. I believe the mount and caliper can be removed as a set.

After removing the calipers, it looked like the funky castle nut that held the bearings on also retained the rotor. I couldn't see the two separate pieces and I thought that I'd have to remove that nut to remove the rotor. Turns out the rotor just fits over the hub and is held in place by the lugs. One side tapped off easily with a hammer. I had to :smash: the other side pretty good with a scrap piece of 2" x 4" and a hammer for about 10 minutes. It eventually came off.

This is just my experience, your truck may be different.

I believe since it is 4 wheel drive that the rotors should be outboard meaning the rotor just slips over the wheel studs and is held tight when the wheel is tightened on the studs. Most front wheel drive vehicles have outboard rotors.

My hubs are the auto hubs with ABS.... the manual doesn't look as difficult as my Suburban.
