Default looking for pix of headers on a big block:

If anyone can post a pix of their engine compartment which shows their headers I would be very grateful. I am considering adding them to my engine and wanted to see how they fit & what they looked like under the hood.

Thanks in advance!!!

Same here Mark. I hope somebody has some pictures! I'm trying to figure out if the Jet-Hot coated Hooker super comps (1 7/8) are worth the extra $250 over the Hedman's with factory ceramic coating. I do know that you don't want the Hooker 2 1/8" headers. They have very low ground clearance, and they're too large for a small big block. Are there any other headers that will fit?

On a totally separate issue: Since you've rebuilt your 427, you've probably seen a '68 L36 crank. Is it forged or cast? I've got conflicting information in my books.

Flareside, the crank was cast, not forged. It also was listed in the machine shops reference guide as used with (or maybe just compatible with) 396, 402 or 427. Crank # is 3804816 with a casting date of K 30 8, which is No. 30, 1968 I believe,(car was built in Jan '69). So, no forged crank in there. What was interesting was that the crank was 32 years old and had never been ground (.010, .020,etc.) even though the block had been rebuilt at least twice before. Kind of odd?

Also, could you look up the specs on my heads like you did for Bence? I think I have a similar oval port head and was wondering about the intake runner size.#'s are 3931063. Also, I remember the exh. ports as being somewhat square but with rounded off corners. I was wondering if your research could determine the size (in inches) of the ehx. port opening. I was wanting to know this so I can determine which header to get. For instance, Hooker Super Comps list the primary tube opening for my car/engine as SAP (same as port), so what does that mean? Did all cast iron heads of that era have the same size and shape exh. port? If the exh port opening was bigger than the header primary tube... that wouldn't be good for exh. flow now would it???

Many thanks for any help you can give me!!!

Thanks Mark! I had really hoped the crank was forged so I could reuse it in a bigger, more powerful engine. Oh well...

Here's what I have about the 063 heads: 3931063, oval port, 2.06/1.72 valves, 101cc chambers, 260cc intake ports, Highest HP usage 400, identical to 3917215. Sorry, but they don't say anything about exhaust ports.

Thanks for the info Flare. I'm thinking that Hooker must be a good fit based on the positive comments on this Forum, so that's probably the way to go.

As far as your crankshaft is concerned: if you have the dough Crower can make you a stout forged crank with the 3.76 stroke you desire. Another option is to contact a machine shop or two in your area, some may have an assortment of old cranks.

I live in Jax. Fla. and I deal with Gary John's Automotive Machine for high performance work. I believe he could have a forged crank or two as I had asked his son, Chad about that subject a few months ago. Their ph # is 904-388-8808. Ask for Chad or Gary Johns (they are well known locally for being big block Chevy specialists and they build NHRA pro stock motors as well). All cash, no credit cards, unfortunately.

Thanks again for the info!!
