Default M/C Solenoid '81

Why does my '81 run great when the M/C Solenioid is UNplugged. Does it hurt the car/carb/engine to run it like this?. Its true that the check engine light stays on because of the closed loop that it produces but the difference in WOT is really noticeable. i hate this computer-carb. My mechanic checked the car over twice, rebuilt the carb and still can't figure out why the check engine light keeps coming on with the solenoid plugged in. He didn't believe me when I told him that it runs better w /out the Solenoid plugged in

Just a thought:
On mine the electrical connector has a lot of the plastic surround broken (Bubba?) so it can be fitted either way round. If fitted the wrong way round the engine runs badly. Could your connector be fitted incorrectly?
Have you got any fault codes stored?
