I think Stingy74 posted that a while back. It looks like his rear end locked up and then it popped his wheels off. That would suck :(

I do not believe that is a rearend failure.

I think we are seeing his wheel studs get twisted off. This would explain why his wheels get "dismounted" and the appearance of a wheel spacer rolling along on the ground.

Gotta agree with 45ACP on this one, looks like the lugs snapped off. You can see the left rear start to come off as soon as he launched it. It's hard to tell, but it appears that the other guy might have red-lighted too! (He left a lot earlier, that's for sure) :smash:

I agree with 45ACP you'll notice three things right off. Big tires, so he was using some type of spacer to mount them. When the tires pop off nothing is connected to them (no axil parts or brakes). I believe it's a spacer disk that you see in the movie - that you see dropping on the track.

The guy put spacers which gives you less wheel nut, stud to grab on to and it makes it easy to shear the studs. That's why NHRA has rules about stud diameter and length

I agree with longer studs. We tried to fit my 17x9.5 5" backspace wheels on my friends 80 with stock studs. We got them on but since the rear required one 3/8 spacer to clear the caliper we barley got any stud which to torque on. I told him not to autocross like that because of the severe stud flex that would happen but we did drive around town for three days with no problems. I've got extended length Moroso studs on my car and there is plenty of stud left with the 5" backspace wheel and even two 3/8 spacers.
