Default Just Purchased A Set Of Heads!

The heads that I purchased are the #3856206 heads, which indicates they are off of a 396, have closed combustion chambers and are oval port heads. The heads currently have 2.19/1.88 valves installed. They have also been intake port matched to a Holley Strip Dominator Intake and exhaust port matched to 2" primary headers (which are what my headers are).

These heads were exactly what I was looking for. I'll still have a lot of my bottom end as opposed to going to the R-Port heads but the port work and bigger valves will still allow them to flow rather well. :)

These heads are used and the guy was using them on an 11:1 CR 454 that ran 10.90s. Obviously I don't expect to run 10.90s but these heads should work well for what I'm going for. I'm building my engine close to the specs of one of the guys engines off of http://www.chevelles.com . The setup should be good for low 12s to high 11s (fingers crossed). I'm getting there....slowly but surely.

BTW my blowproof bellhousing should be coming in any day now.

P.S. I should note that these aren't Merlin heads (duh), but they fit into my budget much better...jeez I wish I had more money :(

I can't wait to be making the same post in 5 years when I buy my AFR 190's! Those heads sound like a great match for the car.

Hey Bence,

Just wondering why you are going with the Torker II intake? Is it due to the hood hight restriction. For your setup that might be somewhat restricting.. Just curious. If you can fit a taller intake wouldn't the Victor Jr be better? :flag

I chose the Torker II partially because it will (supposedly) fit under my stock hood. I talked to MoMo about the Torker II and he said it's a great intake. In fact he will be running it on his 600+ horsepower 427. If it is good enough for his 7200RPM shifting 600+ HP 427, I think it will be ok on my 6000-6500RPM shifting 500-550 HP 454. I am also gasket matching the Torker II.

Bence, make sure you use "closed chamber" pistons to match your closed chamber heads. TRW makes seneral choices that are forged and affordable. Good luck with your project! I enjoy reading your posts and hearing what decisions you make.

Mark, the "BSE" combo from Chevelles that Bence is talking about actually uses LS6 TRW open chamber pistons with closed chamber heads to yield 10.0-10.7 compression depending on cc's, deck height, and head gasket. You do have to check valve clearance. You also have to run a pretty stout cam to make it live on pump gas. Many over there have done it.

I just love the sound of a high compression, solid lifter engine! Bence, get that car finished, I want to hear it!

Bence, just in case you didn't know it, the '65 206 casting doesn't have a temperature sensor boss. You'll need to fit the senson in your intake.

Damb, 97cc chambers. You don't mess around!

Joe:
Thanks for the input, I did not realize that it didn't have a temperature sensor. I guess it's not that big of a deal, I'll just do what you said and plug one into my intake. I wasn't sure if they were 100cc or 97cc but you just confirmed it. 97cc chambers should put me right around 10.5:1 compression ratio :)

I talked to the guy on the phone yesterday. It turns out he was using the heads on his '75 Camaro w/ 454 (ran 10.90s easily). He was running a .625" lift Lunati solid lifter cam. The heads have only been off of the engine for 1 month and have about 50 runs on them since the rebuild. He is taking them to his local machine shop to have them mag'ed. I'm going to clean up the valves and have the heads hot tanked with my block. I'm also buying the complete Comp Cams cam kit. That way the heads will have matching valve springs and new valve locks & seals.

Once I get the engine built, in the car and running I'll be sure to take some pictures. I'll see if I can get one of my buddies to record some .wav files of it running when I get the big block in :yesnod:

Bence, my reference books have a little more info on the 206 heads for you:

3856206, 2.061/72 valves, 97cc chamber, oval port, highest hp usage 325, intake port volume 225cc.

The 225cc port is important to note, since it's the smallest port ever used on a BB as far as I can tell from my references. For reference, the 215 ports are 260cc, and the Merlin's are 265+cc. Not really a problem, but they may not match your rpm goals. (Then again, the guy is running 10's, so what do I know!)

Flareside, I guess the piston you spoke of must be a flat top. My understanding of closed chamber heads was that you had to use a closed chamber piston. But, that you could run open chamber heads with either (type of piston). Of couse, Bence is building a 454 and most of those pistons appear to be flat top. Perhaps the closed chamber piston is unique to only 396,402 or 427?

Flareside:
They were originally 225cc....but the heads that I am purchasing have a gasket matched port job with the bowls blended and larger valves....so these aren't exactly your old plain-Jane "206" heads :)
