scrubbed it with soap and a brush, wiped it down with mineral spirits, let dry.sprayed it with black satin spray paint from Wal-Mart.it has held up fine and looks a lot better.

dusted it off, and used a little Krylon touch.. looks ok, I'll hit it with chassis black after I paint the car.

Flat Black ...
Much better than red overspray.
Nice constrast to the aluminum (high heat) painted exhaust system.

I used Krylon satin finish because I llike that look. However I was told by an NCRS judge that the closest to "correct" chassis color is Krylon semi flat. Either way it makes a world of difference when its done. :flag

Paul,
I used Krylon semi-flat black on mine, and Eastwood's Chassis Black (glossier than Krylon) on the "V" metal strap. It turned out real nice (specially considering that it had a hole the size of a football before I repaired it :D), but I have no idea how long it will last--haven't installed it yet.

I used Krylon flat black for the tub and gloss black for the metal bracket, I think it looks pretty good. It's been on there for about four months, so I can't really vouch for how long it will last. If you do remove the metal bracket you will need to find some Snowmobile pop rivets to put it back on.

Mine was somewhat rusted (the straps anyway), so I used a drill powered wire wheel and removed the old paint and rust. I then primered it with Krylon and painted with Krylon semi-gloss black. I covered the tub with newspaper and tape to avoid overspray and then cleaned it with soap and water when finished. Looks great and lasts as long as you don't drop it on the ground when removing it for more work on other projects. :mad

Thanks for the replies :)
I'm getting the metal frame thing (& every other bit I can easily get off) powder coated gloss black. The rivets are large flange types that RS sells in their catalogue.
Pedro: After cleaning all the clag off of the tub I've found some damage where it looks like it's been dragged down the road under the car. What did you use to repair the hole in yours? As all the fillers I can get set solid & the tub is flexible, I'm worried that a solid filler will crack. Or should I just use fibreglass on the inside of it & prevent any NCRS dudes from looking at the spare? ;)

Paul,
I had to make a mold and make a big fiberglass patch, and I think it turned out pretty strong. If you ask me, I think a fiberglass repair would be the way to go--it'll be stronger than a new one. :)

I think to be "correct", it is left unpainted. Screw correct!!! After I patched the giant hole in mine, I used carbon fiber to do this...
I have since polished both mufflers and it now looks much cleaner but still understated.

Yes it was unpainted to begin with, if you have the original unpainted version on yours a good degreaser will reveal the original color.

71roadster,
Did you just place one layer of fiber cloth over the tub? How did you get the cloth to conform to the shape so well? Are there cuts in the cloth that don't show up in your pic? How did you apply the resin, to get such a smooth even finish? I've never played with fiber bot it looks a lot like fiberglass cloth.
Please help.

Thanks for the replies. I'll go for fibreglass & satin black paint (who cares about "correct"). The original colour was a flat black plastic with various scrapes & scratches,
71Roadster: nice repair.
