Is this an 82 drive shaft???
I went to Dave's salvage yard in Placentia, CA tonight and found an "82 corvette drive shaft". I picked it up thinking that it would help me in my conversion to a 700r4. But i got home and compared it to my 78 driveshaft and it was 4.5" shorter. I thought... HUH??? Isn't it supposed to only be about 3" shorter??  So where did I mess up? Or is this drive shaft actually from an 82? Thanks guys... :conehead

I don't understand. Does the 700r4 change length between 82 and later? Or is the rear diff. closer or something? Can somebody please explain this to me?

Don't have an answer to the question but just wish I could get Corvette parts at a junkyard ! :D

What year 700R4 did you use and what is the length of the drive shaft you bought? If you need the correct length of an 82 I can measure mine for you tomorrow. Let me know.

Re: Is this an 82 drive shaft??? (82 Super Vette)
can't say for sure, but the difference in the 78 to 82's is the 79 was the last year for the old style differential. in 1980 the backend changed with a different differential and this could account for the difference.

Re: Is this an 82 drive shaft??? (Gary79)
Thanks everyone. I took it back today. I figure that Gary is correct. I guess that because of the rear diff change that the lengths must have not matched up for me. I'm gonna just put another TH350 in for the mean time. I'll save a bit more and do the 700r4 swap right. Thanks for all the help to everyone on this board. You are really helping out a guy without too much experience really enjoy his vette!!! :) :chevy :)
