Default Separator Assem located on fuel tank??

Just got back from my local Chevy Dealer where I was told that the Separator Assem p/n 7028035 was discontinued in 1986 and there are no approved manufacturers to reproduce this part.
Does anyone know where I could possibly get one, NOS. Or even if this part is a required piece (read: required for safety)?
Mine rattles somewhat like a check valve, does this indicate the separator is good or bad? Thanks for all your help.

I believe they are "supposed" to rattle like a PCV valve. I think it's actually an anti-rollover valve(check valve) that would prevent fuel from leaking in a rollover accident.
