Her car has the twilight sentinel option which comes on due
to a certain degree of darkness.

Yeah, if your car has this feature you will see a 'Twilight Mode' option when cycling through the DIC's option menu. You'll also see a little black-domed sensor on the right side of the dash defroster vent.

Its called the Twilight setting and can be accessed through the DIC. I believe its one of the first choices when you go into the options. You can turn it on or off. If you look in her owner's manual, you'll find all you want to know about it on page 2-52. It will also be in your owner's manual but I don't know what page its on.

Wow...this is good to know. Didn't realize some of the Vettes had this as an option.
So here's a good question...is this a standard option with all Vettes (including FRC's) or is it an option that appeared on later model C5's like the 02-04's?

2023 C5 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
As the guys say Twilight Sentinel has an ambient light sensor that checks the background light and pops the lights up automatically when it senses low light conditions. To check it, try starting in the garage and the lights will pop up. Then try starting outside in bright sunlight and they'll stay down.
It was an option: T82 Headlamp Control, Automatic on/off (Twilight Sentinel) but it came with the ISB and ISC packages.
Its selectable on US spec cars through the DIC:
Twilight (Optional in United States, Standard in Canada)
Press the OPTIONS button until TWILIGHT - OFF appears on the display, then use the RESET button to page through the following selections:
TWILIGHT - ON
TWILIGHT - OFF
If you choose TWILIGHT - ON, press the OPTIONS button again to display DELAY TIME 1 2 in the DIC. Use the OPTIONS button to switch between delay time 1 and 2. You can increase the delay time by pressing button 1 (1 FUEL) or decrease the time by pressing button 2 (2 GAGES). Each bar is equal to 12 seconds.

With twilight senitel you can program the headlight features on the DIC. I have mine turned off because it minimizes wear and tear on the already weak nylon headlight motor gears. The lights came on everytime I started it in the carport and turned off as soon as I hit the street. It just didn't make sense.

Same here-I already have a problem with the left headlight-If I haven't used them in a while the left one takes a few tries before it will open up and turn on. That gear fix is on the list after the driver seat bottom replacement, the driver power seat control switch bezel and the crapped out oil pressure sending unit.

It is part of the "Preferred Equipment Group 2" options.
I turn it on only when I'm driving around when it's getting dark out. As the others said, otherwise if it is light out I cycle the setting preventing them from coming on and off in the garage.
