Default what do u think of this deal? fastburn crate w/430 hp

I am going to purchase a crate engine. I was considering a zz4 with the hot cam option for $4200. This would provide 395 hp w/405 torque. I just found this ad for the fastburn. Does anyone think I should go for it? It's an extra $400 for 35hp and 25 lbs. of torque. Is the extra $ worth it.

Fastburn 385 Engine with LT4 Hot Cam Upgrade Price: $4,595.00
Part # SD3510

Horsepower: 430 hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 430 ft/lbs @ 4400 rpm
Compression Ratio: 9.6 to 1
Duration @ .050" I/E: 218/228
Lift I/E: .525"/.525"
Block: Cast Iron 4 Bolt 1 Piece Rear Seal
Crank: GM 1053 Forged Steel
Heads cc: Fastburn 62cc
Intake: GM Aluminum Dual Plane

We have taken the popular Fastburn 385 and added the LT4 Hot cam and GM performance 1.6 roller rockers. This combination pumps out a tire smoking 430 horsepower. This engine starts with a four bolt main 1 piece rear seal GM block, a GM forged steel crank, LT1 PM rods, and hypereutectic pistons. It has the fastburn angle plug aluminum heads with 2.00"/1.50" valves. These heads have a 62 cc combustion chamber and 210 cc intake port. The engine is topped off with a GM high rise dual plane intake and HEI distributor. Just add a carburetor and you are set with a killer street engine.

Very pricey, not worth it at all.... but if you don't do it you will regret it every day you own the plain jane engine, and you will probably end up spending more money on mods trying to capture the extra hp. MJ

Sounds good to me. There's a ZZ450 that puts out about 450HP for about $6,500 here http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Chev...eeZZ450HP.html

I have a little different opinion on this. Since you're not increasing displacement, and you're not changing the heads, where is this power coming from? With a cam and rocker change, you're just moving the HP to higher rpm at the expense of low end. I would really like to see a dyno chart of each engine before I decided. Do you have the gearing to work with a very high rpm engine that lacks low end torque? Are you building a street cruiser or a drag racer?

Actually, the difference here is the rockers. The ZZ430 is basically a ZZ4 with fast burn aluminum heads taking it to 385 HP, then add LT4 HOT cam bringing it to 395 HP, then add 1.6 roller rockers bringing it to 430HP. That's my understanding anyway.

P.S. If your handy at all, you may save yourself some money by buying a Fastburn 385 ($3,900?) and adding the HOT cam and 1.6 roller rockers yourself before you install.

On second thought, after you end up buying the additional stuff like tall valve covers to house the 1.6 rockers, you probably wouldn't save any money doing it yourself. I say go for it!!! :D

also note...shop around.
watch the shipping + handling can kill ya....and everyone i deal with has different prices. also check their feedback...as in other customers and how their service is. Finding all the HP + TQ are one thing.....but if you had a 500 HP engine that broke down every week....hind site of the the lower more reliable 450 HP with better service and a few mods would be a better buy.

$0.02 :D

Andre,

I have heard good/ bad things about the "hot cam" setup. You are probably going to sacrifice some drivability. A lot would depend on what gears and transmission you are running. I found out the hard way that a big cam cam make driving miserable. I put too big a cam in my 327 (comp cam 285). It sounds evil, but is VERY rough below 2,200 rpm. I am going to fix this with a 406 SB.

If it was my $$, I would look into having a 383 or a 406 built. This is no replacement for cubes. A bigger motor will give you a lot more usable RPM range. You should be able to guy a 400 hp 383 for around $3-4,000 from a mail order company like speedomotive.com. You could probably save some $$ and have a reputable local shop build you a 383 or a 406. I have been quoted around $3,500 for a 406 that will crank out over 400 hp (and this price includes installation).

I know everyone says it, but it is probably true, you would be much happier with a motor that made monster torque down low than one that made big numbers at 6,300 rpm.

Good luck,

Mike

I am always puzzled when I see statements like this. I have a 383 with the Comp Cams XE284 in it. The idle is a little too rough at the stock 750 RPM's which can cause stalling problems, but if I just bump the idle to 900-1,000, I have no problems. It certainly doesn't run rough to 2,200 rpm's. Are you sure your problem is the cam?

Mako,

383 cubes will tame a big cam a lot better in a 327. My cam in your motor would be a lot more streetable than it is in my motor.

To answer some of the questions. My car has a th350 w/ 3:70 gears. I am interested in a cruiser not a strip vehicle. I really have no interest in high speeds just mostly low end .

If you're not looking for more top end power, you'd probably just as happy with the standard ZZ4. The power increases from the bigger heads and cam wouldn't be noticed until higher revs and would probably cost you some low end torque. A good compromise might be the standard Fastburn 385 engine. It comes with the better heads but with the ZZ4 cam. If you later decide that you do want 430 hp, the Hot cam and 1.6 rocker package is less than half the cost of replacing the heads if you'd started with the 395hp engine.
