Default Removed Spare should I reinstall Carrier...

Does it serve any function other than carrying the spare or does it prevent wind from pocketing in there? Because I'm feeling kinda of lazy about reinstalling it if its not necessary.

Thanks

It was designed to provide a safety measure for rear-end collision, when the spare tire is in the tub. Also, it just looks better with the tub in place, much more "finished" look, in my opinion.

I'm not sure that the carrier will tighten up without a tire in place.

I like the look without the carrier. I can't answer the smooth air question.

I've had mine off for a few weeks now. I haven't noticed any ill effects. Of course, I'm still not sure about the safety issue, but if you don't have the spare in there, I don't think the tub would offer much collision protection.

As far as aerodynamics, I haven't noticed anything negative. I'm thinking my gas mileage is up a little from the reduced weight, but I can't tell on two tanks yet.

I was going to try to put a piece of sheet metal to cover the underside of the gas tank & the rest of the area to keep road grit from getting up there, but some leave the top side of the tub up there.

Yup: carrying tools, vital fluids, spare parts, dirty clothes, etc. etc. ... :D

I'm currently driving without the carrier, but I fixed it (had a big hole) and will reinstall it, even though I don't think it's worth carrying my spare:

I like the look without - plus, it will rattle without a tire in it.
